Mulberry describes itself as 'Luxury English Fashion' and that's exactly what it is. The Bayswater bag is Mulberry's statement piece, and anyone who has properly experienced the bag must understand why it is so popular. Of course this isn't a bag you're going to run into on the streets everyday. It is made exclusive by the price it carries but for that price you are also getting real quality. A lot of people would say that buying a product such as this is extortionate and ridiculous, but I beg to differ. We all have our interests; for some it is travel, for some video games, and for some it is fashion or in particular, handbags. A handbag is something which you carry with you every day, and so why not spend out on it? Over a lifetime, a video game collector may spend many thousands, and so a handbag fan should not be criticised for doing the same!
First off I will say if you do decide to buy a Mulberry, do be careful where you get it from. There are many knock-off's available especially on the internet. You may think you will be safe when buying from a trusted site such as amazon, but this is not the case. A lot of products sold on amazon are sold by Amazon Merchants (this is the case for 'Mulberry' bags) whom amazon do not deal with directly and hence cannot verify the authenticity of their products. Basically, do not buy a Mulberry online unless you are buying it directly from Mulberry, as you are likely to be very disappointed. Mulberry do not supply and so you can guarantee that any Mulberry bag you find outside of a Mulberry store or Mulberry section in a large department store (such as Selfridges) WILL be fake. The only exception is if it is used, but even in this case you do need to be extremely careful.
Now onto the bag itself. I personally bought the Snowball White Grainy Patent Leather Bayswater for £795. The price of the large Bayswater varies from £695 - £3500 for the Ostrich leather version. Most versions of the bag are £795. I love the soft colour of this bag and you can view it on the Mulberry website here: http://www.mulberry.com/#/storefront/c5481/7402/wesuggest/
It's a beautiful colour that goes with almost any outfit and is the 'classic everyday bag'. This certainly is a bag that can cope with being used everyday. It is made from superb quality materials and is likely to last a very long time. The leather is incredibly soft to the point it feels almost fluffy and is a joy to handle.
The bag fastens with a Postman's Lock closure to ensure that the contents of your bag are kept secure. I decided to go for the suede lining which is in a light brown, a perfect combination with the light cream/white exterior. The coordination of the colours flaunts the bag's style and sophistication. The bag has metal feet so you don't have to worry about placing it on the floor, as these will ensure it does not touch anything. The bag is shaped so it stays solid and does not lose its shape whatever you may put inside it. Within the little hanging pouch on the outside lays a key which you could remove if you wish and keep in a safe place to ensure no one but you can get into the bag where you may keep your most important possessions!
The inside of the bag has fastening straps so you can increase or decrease the volume of the bag which is great because if your bag is not very full you can make it smaller so your stuff doesn't fly around inside the bag, but when needed, you can increase this space for (for example) large books or a laptop. The bag has one main compartment with a zipped side pocket, and two slip pockets for your phone or anything else you may decide to keep in them.
The bag handles are long enough to be carried over the shoulder although many may choose to carry it at the elbow if they are trying to show this beautiful bag off! The height of the bag is 26.5cm, the width 36cm, the depth 16.5cm and the handle drop 15.5cm (from the Mulberry website, I did not take these measurements myself and so cannot verify them but one would assume they are true!)
In all, I simply love this bag. It's beautifully crafted, the leather is incredibly soft and it's the perfect luxury everyday bag. I couldn't have asked for more!
Mulberry is a massive designer brand who specialize in bags although they do other goods too. Despite being ridiculously expensive, everything is to die for! So much choice and to be honest, unless you save for a long time or have stacks of cash then you'll be able to own one.
Luckily, my partner got a large job promotion and bonus a few months ago and offered to buy me an early Christmas present. After buying a dozen cheap bags which broke quickly, I really needed a new bag which would last me a long time and be something I would adore.
I knew I wanted the Bayswater handbag after I saw Fearne Cotton with one earlier in the year and had begun saving for one (as a present to myself). When my partner took me on a shopping trip, I browsed Mulberry in my local House Of Fraser, unfortunately they didn't have the chocolate brown one I wanted so we opted to order online. (To visit the Bayswater handbag section click here: http://www.mulberry.com/#/storefront/search/bayswater).
--- Price & Where To Buy ---
After spending what felt like days debating between bags, I chose the Heritage Satchel (Fudge High Pebbled Matte). I was quite shocked at the amount of choice there was for one style of bag and the range of price. The few I clicked on ranged from £400-£3,500 so be conscious how much you're spending and make sure you definitely want the bag - it won't be worth the money sat in your wardrobe collecting dust!
Mulberry are stocked in department stores all over the country and have a couple of their own independent stores too which are all listed on the website. The bag I brought cost £950 and the price is the same wherever you buy.
If you buy online then the postage only comes to £10 which is quite reasonable and to be honest I'd happily pay more to make sure the bag got to me safely as it costs so much! When it arrives at your door you do need to sign (safety first). The bag is in a dust cover which is inside a gorgeous Mulberry box. Top marks for presentation! This presentation is also the same when you order in store - you just get a bag too.
-- The Bag --
As I previously mentioned, I brought the Heritage Fudge version (Product code: HH8333_000H113) of this bag so your choice may be very different to mine with the material so don't be alarmed - all bags have an almost identical look though.
The heritage bag is a satchel which is really popular this season and one of my favourites. Unlike some of the cheaper versions of the bag, mine has two straps hanging down either side of the handles which have a small bronze 'pin'. There are two handles attached to either side of the bag which are quite slim but thickly padded and attached well so they are sturdy and can manage a heavy weight. Around one side of one strap is a leather luggage tag which has the bronze pin on it too. (It isn't really a pin but I'm not sure what to call it as its just a dot of metal'. The signature Mulberry postman's lock closure is between the two straps with the Mulberry logo embossed onto it - I always fasten mine but you don't have to. The bag also has a longer strap which attaches both ends so you could carry it longer or just use the strap as decoration. On the base is 4 metal feet which help to stop getting the bottom of the bag dirty although I find that they don't really do much and are more of a decoration feature. There are also two small straps either side which can be loosened to increase the space inside the bag but I have never touched mine as the bag is big enough without loosening it!
Inside the bag, it is lined with the fabric printed with the Mulberry logo which I thought was a nice touch and makes it nicer than just a plain colour. There is a pouch for your phone or lipsticks and a zipped pocket for other products. It is pretty average with the inside features but I think its nice because you can always find your mobile phone no matter how crammed the bag is.
--- Size ---
I personally would not use my bag for college/university and lugging books around (I have canvas bags for this!), but if you chose to use yours for this then it will fit A4 folders/notepads easily.
The bag is quite a good size and can be hung off your arm or slung over your shoulder without feeling bulky. I can fit all my goodies inside such as purse, make-up bag, phone, umbrella, etc and it isn't stuffed to the brim. I quite like how light the bag is when empty because when its full, it doesn't break your arm to carry it. Other bags I've used have weighed quite a bit so I can hardly carry anything inside.
I haven't measured mine as I'm awful with getting it right and its stuffed with things at the moment so I thought its best to get the dimentions off the website which are:
Handle Drop: 15.5cms (the length it will fall from the top of your shoulder)
--- Practicality ---
If I used this bag every day it would be very practical, but because its so expensive I am always worrying about getting it dirty or ruined. You can buy special leather protectors and I think Mulberry do one themselves which helps to protect it from water damage and other things. I have used my bag a handful of times over the last couple of months and it is still in perfect condition.
--- Verdict ---
I would recommend this bag to anyone who has a bit of a sweet tooth when it comes to designer handbags as it really is perfect and I couldn't fault it. The quality is amazing and expected from such a well known brand.
I bought my bayswater in chocolate just last Christmas. I don't normally buy expensive handbags, but being fed up with bad quality leather and threads constantly sticking out of my bags, I decided to pay a little bit more and looked for my perfect bags.
I wanted a bag that can be formal enough to be brought to work (I had to dress in business-attire for school), and yet can also look casual enough to go with trousers/ jeans/ boots etc. I wanted a bag that can easily fit A4 documents in it, and NOT clumsy-looking at the same time. I want a bag that can match well with my summer dresses, and also my winter trenchcoats.
Some compare the design of Mulberry Bayswater with Hermes Birkin, and I have to say, when I first saw it my first impression was 'Ah, that looks like a Birkin'. I think it's the proportion of their designs that make me and many others fall in love with this bag at first sight. It would be interesting to know if the designers had used the classic golden ratio (there're silver ratios and bronze ratios as well, but they are less well known) in its design. The Bayswater just looks right. The perfect proportion. Classic and chic at the same time, look at Kate Moss and her Bayswater.
So here comes the technical details. You can easily fit your A4 documents in (even one of those big folders, although I wouldn't recommend that), the leather smells and feels so good, and stitchings are seamless. I picked chocolate because it's dark enough to go with winter clothes, and also goes well with summer clothes, and you don't have to worry about watermarks ruining your bag quite as much as other paler colours. About the postman lock, to be honest I haven't used it at all as I open and close my bags so many times a day, but it definitely looks good as a decoration as well. Inside there's a zipped pocket which you can easily fit your wallet, your passport, or some sanitary items in. There are two smaller pockets (without zips) which are just the right size for phones and cameras. I once stuffed 10kg of things in it (just at the airport, this is NOT recommended, I just had no other choice!), and the handles have no problem with heavy weight, and it didn't hurt my shoulders at all carrying it around.
I got this bag with about £700 from House of Fraser. But like last year, I notice after Christmas some less popular leather and colours would go on sale, you could potentially get a standard size Bayswater with around £500 (there was a white one last year selling at £450-500 on the Mulberry offical website), so if you check constantly you might be able to get yourself a perfect bag at a good price! This is honestly, the best purchase I have done last year. I'm so pleased with this bag that I take it with me everywhere almost everyday (not rainy days though), and I think it worths every penny I spent on it.
The ultimate Mulberry classic, the Bayswater is a true investment piece. Fork out your £600 now and you just know it's not going to go out of fashion, like the other so-called "it-bags".
The bags come in various leathers, the original was called Darwin. I have the baby Bayswater (known as the Ledbury) in this leather in the "oak" (tan) colour and although it has been used and abused for years it just gets better with age and it now looks almost like a beautiful vintage piece.
Newer Bayswaters come in "natural leather", similar to Darwin but a little more light weight. I have the regular size in the "chocolate " (dark brown) which is a great go-to bag which goes with everything. It is roomy with one big compartment, fastening with the Mulberry signature postman's lock. The bag is unlined suede with a small zip compartment with two pockets for small valuables.
I also have a slighlty more unusual Bayswater in navy patent leather with gunmetal hardware. This bag is quite a bold statement and a modern twist on the classic Darwin bags.
In all, this bag makes you feel special, and you know it will for years to come. It is instantly recognisable as a design classic and it is reinvented every season with new colours / leathers. I will definitely invest in other colours in the future.
I have had my Bayswater for 4 years now and it remains one of the best investments I ever made. Pricey, yes but oh, so worth it. I always feel fab when I take this to the shops, the theatre or to the kids' parent's evenings. I love it.
It is roomy, with space for all my bits and pieces in the main interior space and a small, zipped compartment for the little bits you need to keep separate or safe. I find it is ideal for any event where you need a smart bag but have to carry extras, like a camera or the kids' stuff with you.
Mine is the tan, natural leather version. It just looks better with use, acquiring a 'lived in' look that is very comfortable and classy.
Every so often I rub some leather cream into this bag, it looks and smells great when you have done this.
I love this bag.
It would have been five stars, except for the price.
