“ Brand: River Island / Type: Handbag „
I normally like dark coloured bags simply because they tend to go with everything. Most of my handbags need to be a certain size so I can generally get my day to day work things in such as my Blackberry, numerous pens, Filofax to name just a few and if I can squeeze a file or two in then I will! I have several River Island bags and although my one given to me by my mother in law at Christmas was pretty much a disaster I hadn't given up on them completely and when I made the decision to look for a nice pale coloured bag for the summer as I felt like I needed to brighten my bags up a little River Island was my first stop.
River Island does have a wide and varied bag selection from small clutch bags to quite large slouch type bags and their prices are never ridiculous but they do have a slightly more expensive leather range which is what you'd expect for a leather bag. After browsing my local store I opted for the River Island Cream Zip Lock Bag, it did also come in black which I did pick up initially before seeing the cream. It comes in at a very reasonable £35.00 which I thought was a pretty average price to pay for a hand bag.
The bag as said above (and pictured on Dooyoo) is cream in colour although not quite as light as on River Island's website but there is no mistaking it's colour! The bag does have a snakeskin effect texture to it and of course this adds to the design. The bag is classed as bowling bag type style simply because of its shape as it is round at the top and curves in slightly at the sizes to give an overall shape which is what attracted me to this bag in the first place. The bag features two handles (one at the back and one at the front) which are attached by shiny chrome effect rings and fastenings. There is also an attached strap at the sides should you want to carry it on your shoulder with the bag hanging down - great idea although the strap is not adjustable.
The front of the bag is where the main details is as there is a large zip which is around 2/3 of the way down the bag which can be opened and items can be stored in. But to open it there is a metal clip lock which has a little press in button which unlocks the clip and then you can open the zip and pop your items in should you want to. Personally, I like this design feature but I do see it as just a design feature rather than something to use so I don't actually use the zip compartment myself simply because I find it a bit of a hassle to unlock the lock open the zip put something in do up the zip and re-lock the bag! I much prefer to leave it well alone! There is a very lovely cream gloss plaque on the front of the bag bearing the River Island name and crown.
The inside of the bag is where all the space is! Despite having a £35.00 price tag the polyester lining is cream in colour which I think is incredibly dull and boring. Personally I like items such as handbags and purses to have a lovely lining, whether brightly coloured or with a nice pattern but this is simply cream in colour to match the bag - hardly a major issue but what I have noticed that over the few months I have owned the bag the lining does become a bit grubby what with constant items being put in and taken out, cream isn't the most ideal colour for constant use.
The inside of the bag features a zip pocket which is actually quite a decent size, big enough to hold quite a bit actually. My zip pocket currently holds numerous pens, lip balms, tweezers, a blackberry case and even a nail polish and there is still plenty of room! The inside zip is outlined in the same polyurethane cream snakeskin style print which adds a little design to the inside which is quite nice. There are also two pouches on the inside of the bag which are opposite the inside zip pocket. They are both large enough to hold any mobile phone (and the larger smart phones). They are made out of the same material as the lining.
My bag is only about 3 months old and because it is made of 100% polyurethane it does seem like it is incredibly durable as there is no noticeable wear or tear (unlike my other RI bag!) and the handle and strap rings are still securely in place. I tend to carry my bag with the handles but that is again just personal preference but there are times I will carry it on my shoulder but when I cram everything in for work it can become a tad heavy so carrying it is much more comfortable than having it rest on my shoulder. What I have noticed though is that the bag can get a little grubby easily especially being cream and I have had to wipe my bag several times to keep the cream colour cream and because it is made from a synthetic material it is waterproof so wiping it over with a damp cloth is easy.
I really cannot complain about this handbag at all. Considering I only normally do dark coloured bags having a cream bag made me feel a bit more summery and I have since bought several other pale bags! It is a really good size for me as I can fit everything in that I need to and still have a little room. My only gripe is the cream lining, I'd much prefer it patterned or a different colour as the lining in my bag is a little grubby which as other people don't see it, it isn't a major problem but to me it is just personal preference. If looking for a smart bag for work or even for casual wear then this is definitely the bag for you. Because of the lining I can only give this bag 4 stars.
