~*~*~*~ River Island Oversized Crossed Body Bag ~*~*~ I love handbags! In 30 years from now I am going to be that little old lady that you see walking around town with ten handbags (hopefully minus the smell of urine). I have so many bags that I buy bags to put my bags in. This is, according to my other half, my worst habit - buying handbags (buying nail varnish is a very close second). I do not discriminate again any handbags, I have bought plenty from Primark, New Look, River Island and I also have a couple of designer handbags, which are my pride and joy. I like most colours and styles, and I do get a real buzz out of buying a new handbag (sad eh?) I cam across this handbag around a year ago whilst shopping around River Island. I love River Island handbags, so I do try and avoid this shop whilst out and about, but on this particular day I just couldn't help myself. If I recall rightly I think it cost me £28.00, which I thought was an absolute bargain and I just had to have it. The first thing that caught my eye with this bag was the size and the design. This bag is made from 100% polyurethane, which give it a leather-look effect. The front of the bag has a zip design (a look as if the zips are missing, if you know what I mean?), a zip up pocket which has a tassel attached to it and a brass plaque with the River Island logo etched into it. There are two colours to choose from, black and brown, and unfortunately I could not pick between them, so I purchased both. The lining of the handbag is the same colour as the outside colour of the bag (i.e. black or brown). On the inside of the back is another zip up pocket which is quite small in size, ideal for you phone or loose change. This is a 'crossed body bag' which means that it sits across your body. The straps are adjustable and can be adjusted to suit different heights perfectly. The size of the bag is 40cm W x 40cm H, which can hold a lot, I have crammed unbelievable amounts of stuff into this bag before. The size of the bag is perfect and sit very nicely on my hip. I have used this bag constantly for over a year and it is still in good condition, it is just starting to look a bit worn (or loved) but it is still usable. This is an ideal casual bag, I take it to work and when I am out and about at the weekend. Overall this is one of my most loved handbags and I use it probably the most out of all my handbags. Its nice that it has long straps so I am not carrying something in my hand all day, and it sit across my chest comfortably. I have even forgot that I am wearing it something and start looking around for it (I am brunette I swear). I give this bag 5 out of 5 Dooyoo stars! Thank you for taking the time to read my review :o)
Having a bit of 'a thing' for expensive Radley handbags, I occasionally appease my husband by opting for a much cheaper River Island alternate. They don't last long and I often find I get bored and go and buy another Radley anyway so its definitely a false economy! I liked the look of this cross body messenger style bag though and loved that it came in a few different colours. I eventually ended up buying it black and cream (on separate occasions!) so have had experience with two of the same bags. My thoughts are a little mixed and this is why. To look at the bag, I cannot fault it in anyway. I've always preferred River Island as my favourite shop on the High Street, with just a few weird items thrown in here and there, the items for sale are often great value, well made and up to date in a fashion sense. I'm not the biggest follower of fashion, I know what I like but don't really try and conform to fashion, I just wear what I think suits me, and after years of buying handbags that don't suit my needs, I've come to realise that a cross body messenger is perfect to sling over my shoulder on the school run, or can be glammed up a little for a meal out. It fits in everything I need (purse, hairbrush, a few make up essentials and some crayons - for the girls, when an emergency tantrum is about to erupt!), and fits it in securely with zipped fastenings. My husband used to say I was a pick pocketers dream (?!) as I used to buy really big bags that would then have just a little clasp or fastening so weren't ever actually fastened. This bag really does go with anything, it looks fab for a walk and stroll to the pub for tea with Welly's and a big coat, but it equally doesn't look out of place with my smart work clothes or skinny jeans and heels. I do prefer using some of my better (Radley!) bags for evenings but if I don't have time to swap the contents over, I know the bag will still go fine with my outfit. At £25 you really can't go wrong, and I find they look like you have spent more than £25 on them. Quality wise they seem well made and sturdy, but my main gripe (and its a big one) is that they seem to wear really easily. The material doesn't come away at the seams or get holes in it, but it seems to attract scratches and marks. My stone /cream colour bag has just gone to the charity shop after only having it for a few months, and not many uses, as it was literally just covered in marks. I may try to spray the black one with some kind of sealant / protector as it just doesn't seem right that it should attract so much wear and tear when it feels / looks really well made. At just over 40cm in width and length it's big enough that it can fit a fair amount of 'stuff' inside and we all know how women love to fill their bags with 'stuff'! I thought when I first bought it that it may be difficult to find things inside the bag but its really easy to find things. The pocket inside is handy for lose change, keys etc, and there is a front zipped pocket but I tend to only put things like lippy or lip balm in here as my husband has freaked me out that I'm going to get pick pocketed! It is shower resistant and does wipe clean to some extent. I look after all of my handbags so I don't think it's my usage of the bag that is the issue. I would be interested to know if anyone else with this bag has had the same issues....
=River Island Oversized Cross Body Bag= River Island Oversized Cross Body Bag I have to confess at this point my favourite handbag is my Radley cross over bag, but at paying £100, its not a bag I feel that I can use every day so needed an in between bag. Then my birthday, and a large box, I wondered what she had done, inside was shredded tissue, then I noticed a River Island carrier bag, she'd brought me the same bag. The receipt was in the bag and it was priced at £25. =Material= The bag is not a leather bag, it is made from 100% polyurethane, but unless you look really closely I don't think you would notice that it was not leather. =Design= On the front of the bag is a Shiny silver River island badge, it is not too big, but to me I wouldn't have put a badge on the bag, as it is not a designer bag, but that is just me being me. The bag also has some studs, a couple of tassels and the zips are a bright silver colour. My thoughts on the bag, whilst I do like the style, I just feel that the design could be outdated in the next season, I feel that this is due to the tassels and the studs feature, although at the moment, I'm happy with it. =Measurements= The bag is 14in (35cm) in height, and 13 1/2in (34cm) approx measurements, so it is a very roomy bag. =Style= The bag is a cross body style and has a long carry strap with adjustable holes so that you can fit the bag to your personal taste. =Compartments= The bag has seperate zipped compartments, which means that you can put different items in the pockets. There is a zipped compartment on the front of the bag, and whilst this is an ideal size for storing a mobile phone, for me, I always carry sanitizer as you never know what you come across/ =Inside Compartments= There is a zipped compartment inside the bag and I tend to use this for my mobile phone, so it is easy to find, and feels more secure than being on the outside pockets. =What can I fit in= This bag feels like a tardis, whether that is because I am a typical woman who carries everything but the kitchen sink Purse, make Up, Phone, fold up shopping bags, keys, little change purse, tissues, medication, notebook, pen, sewing kit, plaster, bottle of water. =My verdict= I know I have been a bit picky in places, but I feel a review needs to be as you the individual find the product, but bar my little niggles, I do really like the bag it fits everything in, although would I pay £25, when I could a leather bag from Next for that? That almost feels like the million dollar question. For comfort it is a 10/10, secure fastening, 10/10. design 7/10, price 6/10. The question I had to ask myself was if I was buying this bag would I be prepared to pay £25 for it and to be honest the answer is no. I have seen similar cross over bags for under £10, which I am sure would do the trick. =Would I recommend= I'm a sit on the fence with this one, while it has plenty of plus points, it also has some negatives, so I would really say its an individual choice.
I'm not really someone who uses a bag all that often and tend to just carry a purse around but recently my friend had a bag at work that I just loved the look of so I just had to have one! She told me that the bag was from River Island so even though I couldn't really afford it I decided to treat myself. The River Island oversized cross body bag comes in two colours, black and brown. I had gone with the intention of buying the black bag but when I saw the brown one I really liked it so opted for that one. The size of the bag is 35cm wide x 34cm high so it is a good sized bag for every day use. It is a very casual looking bag in my opinion but at the same time not one that I would feel uncomfortable using for work either. The bag is made out of 100% polyurethane so has a leather look to it and this means it is waterproof and easy to clean. On the front of the bag there is a small metal bar which features the River Island logo along with some brass coloured zips. There are long tassles hanging from the zip on the front of the bag and another on the main zip on the top of the bag. I think it is a really modern looking bag and not too much like a handbag which is important for me when looking for a bag. When using the bag for the first time I was quite surprised at just how much I could fit into it. As I work long hours I quite often have to take my dinner or tea with me (often both) so it was great to be able to fit these items in along with the standard kind of things you tend to keep in a bag. Inside the bag there is a zipped pocket in which you can keep things such as money or in my case my phone and this is also a really good size. This bag has a long handle as it is a cross body style bag or alternatively you can just hang it off one shoulder as you would a normal bag. The strap is adjustable, as I am quite tall I have it at the longest length but as it is adjustable it can be altered to suit any height. I like how it is a cross body bag as when I am leaving work at 10pm I feel safer using a bag like this with the keys in there than just a normal shoulder bag. I really like this bag, it is my first from River Island and going off the quality I am sure I will continue to buy bags from there in the future when needed. It is so easy to clean the bag and I quite often need to wipe it down as my daughter likes to drag it around the floor when she is pretending to go to work! As yet the bag is still in as new condition and that is testament to the quality. This bag costs £25 and I think that is a reasonable amount to pay for such a good bag. Comes highly recommended from me! Thank you for reading my review.
For my birthday in April my sister had bought me a top from River Island which when I tried it on wasn't really flattering and so she agreed we should go and exchange it. I was given a gift voucher at the time as there was nothing I wanted to buy but a few weeks later I purchased the black cross body messenger bag. I had actually had a bag very similar to this one from River Island a couple of years previously and had to return it twice due to the fact that the zip kept getting stuck but this one seemed to have been modified slightly and so I was happy to purchase it. The bag is made from 100% polyurethane but it looks like a leather effect and it is very soft to touch which I like because I think it makes the bag seem more expensive than the £25.00 it actually costs. The bag features a shiny silver coloured river island badge on the front as well as various silver coloured zips, studs and a couple of tassels too so the bag is bang on trend at the moment in my opinion but it is also the kind of bag that won't suddenly become unfashionable and so I feel I could continue to use this one for years to come providing it stays in tip top condition. The bag is a really good size for me because as someone who works thirteen hour shifts I need to be able to fit my meals in there and I also need to be able to fit my son's things in it from time to time too so I need a roomy bag. There is an identical but mini version of this bag available on the river island website but for the difference in price I would just say purchase the larger roomier one. The measurements if the bag are 35cm tall by 34cm wide and it does seem to fill well so you can fit lots in. The bag is a cross body style and so it does have a long carry strap which is adjustable to your height. I do find being small that even at the shortest the strap can be that the bag hangs down quite low on me with the top being around the level of the top of my bottom. This I find is acceptable as it is meant to hang quite low. As the material is nice and soft I don't find that harsh corners bump my legs and leave bruises or anything! Being black the bag isn't easily marked or made dirty (certainly not so you can see!) and so mine still looks in excellent condition. What I love about this bag is the fact that there are nice little zipped compartments where you can store things such as your phone or purse securely. There is one on the front of the bag which I more often than not pop my phone in so that it is easily accessible for when I want to check it but there is also a zipped compartment inside the bag so I sometimes use this though I usually pop some pain killers and such like in that one as I always like to be prepared! With the previous bag I owned like this the material used to regularly get stuck in the zips and cause a jam but this hasn't occurred at all with this one so it seems river island managed to fix that issue. I am really pleased with my purchase from river island as I feel the bag is fashionable and modern yet it won't be one that in a year I think why on earth did I buy that. It is roomy and so I am planning on using it as hand luggage on the plane when we go to Disneyland in March too. I would thoroughly recommend this bag to anyone and also think it would be the kind of bag gratefully received as a gift. Thank you for reading my review!
I was bought this bag for my birthday back in March this year, thus making it seven months old. Purchased from River Island it cost around £25 at the time and a quick look on their web-site tells me it still is (I don't know if this is the same as in-store). Their web site describes it as a 'black cross body messenger bag with zip front detail, width 35cm, height 34cm', and that it's 100% polyurethane. At slightly over a foot square it's a large hand bag, I use it as a small shopping bag. It easily fits my large purse and the many items of totally un-necessary rubbish I cart around with me. The bag is distressed black, it has a fake leather finish and is soft, squashy and light weight. It is rain proof and can be wiped down. The usual River Island plaque is on the front. There is gold/brass zip detailing on the front-some cosmetic and some for working zips, also a couple of large studs again purely for decoration. Attached to the zips are long black dangly tassles with gold/brass stud detailing- these also hang off the bottom corners (reminds me of a biker jacket). The sides zip down to increase the volume that the bag can hold. On the front is a zip up pouch, inside is a small zip compartment and a couple of smaller pouches for keys etc I suppose (I hadn't thought of that, that'd be handy). The lining is black cotton. The strap is long, it is and attached to the bag with sturdy metal loops. Although the strap is adjustable (like a belt), it has only three options which for me isn't enough, two inches is neither here nor there. Slung across my body it keeps my hands free, but it's too long to wear over one shoulder. This bag holds quite a surprising amount of stuff, the other day I had a four pint bottle of milk in it along with other bits, which was heavy but didn't compromise the bag at all. It seems to cope with quite a heavy load- the straps haven't 'gone'. Upto now the bag still looks good but in honesty I only use it once or twice a week, I think with daily use the leather effect stuff would have worn. but............. The first thing that went was the dangly tassle on the main zip, it started to unfurl itself and looked tatty. Almost every time I go to open it the lining of the bag has got caught in the zip, last time this happened I managed to pull the tassle off and the zip needed such force to free the lining that the teeth of the zip have bent (I was in a rush though had a queue behind me at the garage). Now the bag can't be fully zipped up. So three stars from me just for the size and the fact that the straps are strong, but loses two stars for the stuck lining and the tatty tassle. I would recommend for use as a large hand bag but for occasional use.
Oversized cross body messenger bag - available from River island, £28.00 This black oversized cross body messenger bag with zip front detail, is 43 cm wide and 41 cm in height. (Measurements taken from River Island on-line as I'm too lazy to empty the bag out to lay it flat). I'm a massive fan of all things River Island, and all things hand bag so for me this was a must. I have a friend who has this bag (or one very similar) in tan, that I have been lusting over for a while so while on a shopping trip recently I had to treat myself. For me this bag is great, it is nearly square, and has a wonderful long adjustable handle. This bag can hand by your knees (if that's what you like). It has been decorated with zips, that have their gold / bronze teeth exposed (kind of unopened) as well as metal studs that have been added for decoration. On the front of the bag there is a small bronze coloured metal tag sporting the River Island name. The front of the bag has a pocket which again sports the bronze zipper, as well as a strip of leather strip to act as the zip pull. The bag is secured with a bronze zip on top, and has a bronze zip running down one side of the bag, across the bottom, and up the other side that acts as an 'expander' for the bag so when you have filled tit you can eke out a little more space if you need it. (I've never had this closed!!!!!) For me I find the bag to be a great size you can throw in all the essentials like make up purse, and phone, and still have space for the bits of junk you acquire through the day like a bottle of water, and chocolate bar. It will fit notepads in it (but not A4), as well as books (not oversized monstrosities, or text books though). I find this book to be really great as I can take it anywhere. However it is 100% PVC hence the missing star.
Despite being a person who has a closet full of shoes (that really is no exaggeration!) I am not overly fussed on handbags. Although I own quite a few I don't go out of my way to buy a new bag like I do with shoes. Generally most of my bags come via gifts whether for my birthday or at Christmas which I am more than grateful for! Last Christmas my mother in law opted to buy me a bag (together with a huge gift bag of toiletries!) which was definitely gratefully received - she did also buy the same bag for her other daughter in law! The bag in question is by River Island and is known as the Oversized Cross Body Messenger Bag. I have the black version which for me is a great colour for a handbag. My bags have to withstand a child, horses, dogs, being slung in my car so having a pale colour bag for everyday use is sometimes not the best option and lets face it black tends to go with everything. The Oversized Cross Body Messenger Bag is still available at River Island and although I haven't seen it in store recently it is still currently available on their website (Aug 2012) for quite a reasonable price of £28.00. Messenger bags have been around for years but within the last few years they have become quite 'trendy' and most high street and designer stores have got them on the shelves. Messenger bags are ideal for those that like to carry a lot around as there is just so much room and they tend to have a pretty simplistic design so you can find what you need to without an issue, even in the deepest darkest parts of your bag! My mother in law certainly played safe with choosing this bag as she certainly knows I like to carry everything around with me - when you have a child you don't have much choice! The Oversized Cross Body Messenger Bag is made completely out of 100% polyurethane which is just a cheap alternative to faux leather and of course leather but then for the price of £28.00 I wouldn't expect the bag to be made of leather. The material is incredibly soft and supple but definitely has a slight cheapness to it and I have a feeling that with plenty of wear the material would start to split in places. However, being made of polyurethane means that it is incredibly lightweight, shower resistant and can be cleaned easily with a damp cloth which for me is perfectly fine considering my bags do get abused somewhat. The overall size of the bag is 43cm (w) by 41cm (h) which certainly makes it a decent sized handbag especially for those women like me who like to carry a lot around with them. The lining inside is also black in colour so no extravagance given with the lining which is a bit of a shame. On the inside of the bag there is the usual inside zip pocket which is ideal for keeping small items such as a lip gloss, pen etc but that is it, there are no other pockets meaning you literally have the entire bag to keep stuff (and loose stuff) rather than having millions of pockets to have to delve in. The bag is done up at the top by a zip to keep your belongings secure. The front of the bag is where the most detailing is. The front of the bag does feature another pocket which is fastened with a brass coloured zip. Again, this pocket although not overly large does have enough room to keep a few small items in. Around the top and the bottom of the front of the bag there is brass zip detailing - it looks almost as if someone has taken a zip used the two halves and attached them around the bag to make it look as if the front of the bag can be zipped up - if that makes sense! To me the zip detailing is fine but doesn't do anything aesthetically for me. There is also a small brass plaque with the River Island logo on at the front of the bag. The bag has a large black adjustable handle which is attached via two brass coloured metal rings at either side of the bag. It is adjustable by a buckle and eyelet holes so depending on how low you want it to be you can adjust it accordingly. The bag is of course designed to be worn over your shoulder and the strap to lay across your body so the bag hangs at the back. I do find though that if you've got quite a lot in your bag that this quite slim strap compared to the size of the bag can actually dig into your shoulder and vice versa, if the bag is light the strap doesn't dig in. Personally, I'd like the strap a little wider just to be a bit more comfortable. I have now had this bag for nearly 9 months and although it was gratefully received I would have expected better quality from River Island simply because I have and do own a few of their items (including another handbag and a few purses) all of which have been decent quality. The bag was used a lot to begin with and I noticed that about 5 months in threads started to appear on the strap and to no surprise around the corners of the back the material had started to split and look a bit worn. Another thing I also noticed was that the metal rings at the side of the bag which is where the strap is connected to had actually started to pull away or tear from the main bag itself simply because of general wear and tear and probably because I have carried too much. Now I don't carry an excessive amount of items, certainly not enough to label a handbag heavy but I wasn't expecting to have the metal rings that have the strap attached to actually start coming away from the handbag itself and it was at this point I stopped using the handbag altogether as I knew one day the rings would come off deeming the bag useless as it cannot be worn with no strap! Apart from that the bag had started to get a bit tatty which was a shame as the size of the bag was incredibly useful. Now for £28.00 I shouldn't expect it to stay perfect but I'd expect it to still be useable after 6 months! May be I just over used my bag which is why it is no longer useable but I've had and still have other bags which have lasted far longer and are still going strong including a Primark bag I bought for £3.00 in a sale about two years ago! Overall, I really did like this bag and may be if you don't carry around everything and anything your bag will last you a lot longer but for me it just didn't live up to what I need which is a shame as normally River Island bags are quite decent. Overall, 2 stars for me. Giving 2 stars simply because of its decent size and that the fabric used is lightweight and wipe proof. ~ Useful Information ~ Brand: River Island Price: £28.00 Availability: River Island only Product No: 620944
