Advantages: clear screen, large memory, ease of use
Disadvantages: takes just a little too long to turn the pages
At first, I was sceptic. Theres just something about a new book that is so satisfying, the smell, the crisp pages. Also I like to see how much Ive read and how much I have left to go. But that was before I tried the kindle and realised just how handy it was! The kindle is an e-book reader with an 'electronic ink' screen, which uses incredibly little energy. You can read books as you would normal, except all your books can be stored on one device.
I received it as a gift about a year ago and set about playing with it and loading new books onto it. It is so easy, literally all you need to do is press a button on amazon.co.uk confirming your book selection and your new e-book is transferred wirelessly (if you have the 3G version) to your kindle, ready to read. I really started to appreciate the value of my kindle when I went on holiday for 2 weeks to Turkey. Usually, on a 2 week long lazy poolside holiday I can get through as many as 6-8 books just lounging in the sun. This of course is such a pain when it comes to heavy hand luggage and paying extra baggage at the airport! This year however I just loaded all my books on to my kindle, I have more on there than I could ever read in two weeks but its nice to have a selection. It is so light and barely took up any space in my hand luggage, a nice change from lugging 6 novels through security! The best part about it however was the fact that the screen is still clear and easily readable even in the bright Turkish sunlight, so I could read to my hearts content all day :) Another advantage of the kindle is that on amazon, the kindle edition of books are often cheaper than their paper alternatives- so if youre a keen reader it could save you quite a few quid, or at least pay for itself after a while! The customer support is also really good, I know my aunty, who also has a kindle, had a minor problem with hers not long ago and she rang the help line and a new one was sent out to her quickly. Another advantage is that you can place bookmarks and write e-notes on certain pages of the books your reading. You can also sign up for magazine and newspaper subscriptions which are delivered wirelessly to you whenever you next turn on your device. On amazon, there are many free books available also, mainly classics and older books, but now and then they have offers of new releases for free or for less than 50p.
There are few! One thing that irritates me slightly is that it takes just a little bit too long to change the page on screen, which when youre at the crucial part in your book can be a bit annoying! I think this has been fixed in the newer version though. Another thing is that its very risky reading in the bath. Reading in the bath is always risky, as a book dropped in the bath is rarely much good for anything afterwards, but at least if its a normal book you havent ruined £100 worth of equipment. So as a person who likes to relax in the bath with a good book, this make my bath a little less relaxing!
The kindle is a really good piece of equipment, Incredibly handy for someone who travels a lot or just loves a good book, due to the long battery life it can survive long plane journeys easily. Basically, its a great tool for saving you money and space you wouldve used up on books! I think in a few years everyone will have one! Definitely recommend,
Summary: really good gadget, will be using it a lot!
