Amazon Kindle 3
Advantages: Wireless, replicates look and feel of a book, light, stores well over 3000 books
Disadvantages: Isn't the real thing
I am not a huge fan of electronic devices that emulate the look and feel of a book. However, I was pleasantly surprised when my sister got me one of these for my birthday. I was surprised at how comfortable it was to hold for long periods of time - lets face it if you are reading, you will be doing so for a good while. It was also surprising how clear the text was and how easy it was on the eye much like a real book.
The first book I read on it was World War Z and it took me that how booklike the Kindle felt. I found myself using it when lying down in bed waiting for sleep to take me, on my way to work and generally when the weather was nice to read outside.
Most significantly the fact that not only is the reading angle outstanding, but there is no glare even under direct sunlight - this is without a doubt the best feature of the kindle. To be honest, even though there is something about a physical book - the feel, the smell, the Kindle manages to replicate the most essential part of a book - the reading. The 6 inch screen is very adequate even for large books and sometimes you even forget you are reading from an electronic device.
As far as other features are concerned, they simply enhance the functionality but one can live without them. Being a wireless device allows you to read books stored on your computer or to transfer it straight to the device.
Battery life is simply breathtaking. The Kindle can go without needing a charge for months and months and trust me, you can read yourself many dozen books before the battery causes concern. Another reason why the Kindle feels much like a book (when was the last time a book had to be charged ?).
Also the library of books is growing every day and you can pretty much avail yourself to any book you could desire on the Amazon Kindle store. With that in mind, what this achieves what a book can't is your very own library without needing half a room fo shelves. More than 3000 books in one device is jaw dropping if nothing more.
Lets face it, a book is a book, but if you want your own library, the feel of the real thing then a Kindle is a Kindle!
