Amazon Kindle 3
Advantages: Light, smaller than a book, large capacity, some books are free, cool screen with no glare.
Disadvantages: Can't read in the dark, interface can be a bit fiddly.
As a big reader, I was instantly attracted to the kindle. Now, I could store more books than I will ever get through - without the page turns!
As soon as I turned it on display caught my attention as it was clear and unlike anything I had ever seen. The plus side to this 'E-Ink' is that you can read your kindle in the sunlight without the glare you get from LCD screens. There is also less strain on eyes due to no backlight which is great, but not if you're in the dark. The book transfer system is really easy to use and I can take books from my friend's kindles too by plugging theirs into my computer. If was a bit worried about the technological side of transferring books but I found loads of free programs I can download which were simple enough.
There is a certain charm to a book that the kindle lacks; there is always that book smell that I miss. Although I love its lightness, size and the nerdy thrill I get from reading from it, there was admittedly something I enjoyed about carrying that moth-eaten favourite around with me. My needs precede my nostalgia though, as an English student I do NOT miss lugging five heavy books around campus. A disappointing aspect of the kindle is the price of the books though, as the difference between print and kindle editions is not big. In fact, it can be more expensive to buy the kindle editions; even more so when you are looking at buying used books. On the bright side, most of the classics are completely free to download which makes the price of newer books more bearable.
Overall, I find the kindle a useful alternative. The battery lasts forever, the display is stunning, I get wi-fi and free 3G - although I find the 3G slow and the browser doesn't support some sites, I can highlight and share sections of text if I wish, you get a free Oxford English dictionary with a search function (settled many a scrabble-based argument) and there is a humongous selection of e-books on Amazon to choose from. I have been so happy with my kindle, I can't put it down!
Summary: One of the most useful things I own.
