Amazon Kindle 4
Advantages: Amazing screen, great features
Disadvantages: Maybe adding extra storage would be useful?
There is no doubt about the fact that I love to read, I read anywhere I am if I have a little spare time, on the train, on the beach, at the traffic lights, wherever!! I also love to return to my books and read them again, and again, and again. I did have a kindle 3 until I left it on the plane on a recent trip to LA. So my lovely boyfriend decided that for my birthday, he would get me the Kindle 4!! So today I am reviewing that!
So the main changes, this kindle is less than 6 ounces and is 30% lighter than the kindle 3 but it keeps the same 6" display screen. It loses the QWERTY keyboard and changes it for an onscreen one which we will discuss later; it also has faster page turns.
--Packaging, Inside the Box --
So it was shipped to me in the same shipping as the kindle 3, a frustration free, and eco friendly cardboard box. No knives were needed to open it and there was no irritating duct tape all over the box. To open I just pulled a cardboard tab and the box opened right up, simple as!
Also in the box is the cable, it is a micro USB cable as usual, but they didn't include a wall adaptor as they have with previous versions so to charge it you have to connect it to a USB port such as your computer.
When you take the actual Kindle out of the box the device is wrapped neatly in protective plastic which I like as then it won't get scratched during shipping or anything. It peels off easily enough and doesn't leave a sticky residue or anything.
-- Using the Kindle --
This kindle is not touch based so it has physical controls. It has the navigation pad, the home button, menu button, on screen keyboard button and back button. If you get the onscreen keyboard up, it is controlled by the navigation pad so you have to use the keypad to select a letter or number. The keyboard is actually an a-z keyboard not a QWERTY so I think if they had used a QWERTY keyboard it would be easier for people to use but it is still not difficult to use it's just not what most people are used to.
On the side is a page turning button, the forward one is slightly larger and I find this a nice way to turn the page and it does turn quickly!
The kindle screen is matte, so there are fewer glares, there is a tiny bit but a lot better than other versions and personally I don't really notice it and I have used it on the beach etc.
On the back there is a silver, matte panel that looks like it should be able to be opened like on a phone but it cannot be opened, you cannot add additional storage or batteries to the device.
It is easy to set up and use, the Wi-Fi sets up really simply and easily which I like. On the home screen you can transfer all of your books from previous devices which are something I really like as you don't have to buy them again which would really annoy me. Also if you download the books it also remembers where you last left it in the book, so you don't have to try and remember if you read that bit or didn't read it which is good.
When reading the book after every 10 or so pages it flashes for a split second, I don't know why it does that but it is probably something to do with refreshing the content or something. You can turn the pages one at a time, you cannot hold down the button and it will scroll through the pages but I do like the page turning.
-- Features ---
You can change all the font sizes to a size which is right for you, as you do this is previews in the background so you don't have to keep going on and off the menu. You can also change the font from I think 3 or 4 different fonts, they are nothing exotic just standard, readable fonts but I like this feature.
Line spacing and words per line are two other features you can change.
There is also a little cool feature which, when you are reading, if there is a word that you don't understand you can put the cursor on it using the navigation pad and a definition will come up at the bottom of the screen.
You can make notes, highlight and search for things through your book. This is useful if you are reading a textbook then you can highlight for example key facts or areas to revise.
You can get onto the kindle store via the kindle which is good as you can download a book straightaway and automatically it will be on your device, the kindle store has many varieties of books and there is something for everyone.
Overall I am really impressed by this Kindle, it is a great price and I think the best and cheapest e-reader on the market. If you are looking for an e-reader, I recommend this one. Thanks for reading this review.
Summary: A really great e-reader at a great price
