As an avid reader and with the prospect of one month in hospital ahead of me, my darling husband bought me what has turned out to be one of my best presents ever, that is my Amazon Kindle. Sometimes circumstances force us to review our current outlook on things. I never thought, for one minute that I would prefer reading on an electronic tablet to flicking through a nice heavy book. However, when I had to have a transplant last year, I needed to ensure that I would have enough reading material to see me through. Stacks of books were simply out of the question; I didn't have enough room for them, I didn't have the strength to hold a heavy book or constantly turn the pages, I couldn't have an overhead night light on to read in the dark and most surprisingly books can be the source of many germs on an highly sensitive post transplant ward. The answer to all my requirements was indeed an electronic book.
Obviously my finances were limited so an ipad was out of the question. I looked at many ereaders on the market but for me the easiest and most convenient to use was the Amazon Kindle. It is an ideal size and weight for reading in bed. It has a very good high definition non reflective screen that makes focussing on the writing very easy. It can be easily operated using one hand (important as I was wired up to many machines initially and could only use one arm) and the wifi connection meant I had tens of thousands of books to choose from. I also bought the official kindle cover with the little light built in that meant I could read during the night as well. I could download newspapers, magazines and books so I did not have piles of papers on my 14inch by 12 inch cabinet. I could also alter the font type and size so that I could read even when my eyesight was very poor due to the drugs I was on.
I have reviewed the kindle with regards to my own personal circumstances to show interested parties just how useful and fabulous this little electronic machine is, but it has since become a big part of my everyday life. Whenever I am on holiday or travelling to and fro or waiting in appointment queues or on the train, my kindle is there. I no longer need to carry around thick heavy books or cumbersome papers and magazines, just my Kindle. On holidays it also allows me to browse the internet to find out about local places or airport timetables and in short it has everything I require all in one place.
I am aware that the ipad and other Kindle rivals have extra functions and operate in full cover, but there is a greater expense involved and they tend to be of a larger size, not what I would call small handbag size. I do still occasionally by books particularly if I know I will want to pass it on to someone after I have finished reading it, but personally, for me, my Kindle is my best friend.
For the technical specification i have taken this from the amazon website for the Kindle 3.
