Amazon Kindle 4
Advantages: cheap, easy to use, e-ink screen
Disadvantages: virtual keypad can be tricky
When i first heard about the kindle i was a little sceptic. not about the quality or price of the product but because i already have bookshelf stuffed with every book i have or want to read. Whats the point in paying for a virtual bookshelf and then paying more on top of that for more books? by the time the kindle 4 came out i took the plunge and went out to buy one. I can harly complain about the price as at £89 its not breaking the bank. I can however complain about the fact that it is around £50 in America, although i can't do anything about it, it still annoys me that once again the UK is being ripped off.
The screen: The screen is a 6 inch with 600x800 pixels whcih hasnt changed since the first kindle, obviously this is one of the things they got right firs time. The newest feature is the e-ink screen which is meant to easier on the eye when your watching it for long periods of time. I never used the previous kindle so i have nothing to compare with but if you have i and experienced strain this has addresed this issue. The longest time i used my kindle in one go was about 6 hours and unlike staring at an ipad for that long, it did not strain my eyes.
features: The amazon book store has around a quater of a million books so there is no worry about running out of downloadable content. As far as the prices go i havnt noticed any difference between online and in store prices apart from a few older books i dowloaded where they are actually cheaper to buy in store. The 2gb is enough for all your needs in most cases but if its not there is a free amazon cloud service so it is pretty much impossible to run out of room
design: The kindle was never in the running for a beaty award in the likes of the ipad but i does still look good. The biggest difference is that the keypad is gone though making the kindle 30% lighter than before. There is a virtual keyboard that at times i found hard to type on but otherwise i think getting rid of the keypad was a step in the right direction. Amazon say it can fit in your back pocket, which it can, but it will break if you sit on it.
since i got it i still read my paperback books but i now do less and less as i buy less books in smiths and more online, plus its not like a holiday where if you want to read something in particular you buy it. everything is stored and accessible straight away. it hasnt replaced books for me altogether but may do sometime soon.
Summary: could provide a solution to your bookcases full of old dusty books and not for much money
