Amazon Kindle Fire HD
Advantages: Sound quality, screen quality, multi functional, looks good.
Disadvantages: Only has internet connectivity through wifi, screen glare
For the purposes of this review I won't get too spec heavy as these can be found easily on Amazon and will just give an overview of the features and my opinion :)
I got the Kindle fire HD as a Christmas gift and was so excited opening it and getting it set up. Unfortunately that's where the excitement paused until the next day as it shut down and had to exchange for a working one on Boxing Day! Massive disappointment but the replacement has been perfectly fine, faulty electronics happen and with my luck it's bound to happen to me on Christmas Day!
I had a kindle keyboard already which I thought I'd continue to read on as I wasn't sure how good the screen would be and if my eyes would feel the strain of reading for long periods. I've since given my old Kindle to my brother after being pleasantly surprised at the screen. You can change the colour of the page, I think if I had it set to white it may be a problem but changing it to sepia gives a comfortable reading experience.
The sound quality of the Kindle fire HD is amazing for a device of this type. I use it to listen to music on a lot as it's loud and crystal clear. I like to buy a lot of music from Amazon as the prices are reasonable so I have quite a lot of albums I can play directly from and create my own playlists to mix them up a bit. Also though the app store has several radio apps to choose from to stream music from. The only downside to this is because it only has a wifi connection you wouldn't be able to use the radio function without being connected. This is fine for me because it's mainly used for music in my kitchen!
Screen quality is also excellent, bright crisp colours and the movies available through Lovefilm look great. I usually have an issue with watching film and TV on small screens but on this device they are more than watchable. The Lovefilm subscription is £4.99 a month, but you can also stream to your laptop and through xbox or smart tv for this price. There is quite a good selection and compared to movie channels on Sky for example it's a very small price to pay. A downside to Lovefilm is that you aren't able to download the films, so again when you don't have wifi connectivity you can't make use of this feature.
Amazons app store, whilst not as extensive as androids play store or apples app store has a good and diverse selection of apps. They also offer one free paid app each day. I've discovered a few really useful apps this way that I wouldn't have downloaded otherwise. A soothing sounds app has been particularly useful with helping to calm the baby. Oh and another I found particularly useful is the pro office suite app. I found it great for college work as I've been able to type while laid horizontally with a baby sleeping on my front. Invaluable when trying to study with a newborn to take care of.
The device is fast, both in touch responsiveness and the speed it opens apps and websites. It's easy to use, no need for a manual, it guides you through set up and with a little playing with it it's very easy to figure out.
There is great Amazon integration which is where they will make a lot of money in return for selling such a good quality item at low price. Books and music are easy to download with a few touches of the screen and physical Amazon products are also just a few taps away.
There is a small camera at the front of the device which is useful for video calls but not much else. Well... actually my kids and I like to pull funny faces into it and take pictures. Something about little things and little minds!
The Kindle itself looks great too. It's all black and kind of sleek looking, with rounded edges and is light so easy and comfortable to hold. The screen although fantastic quality does have quite a bit of glare in bright conditions which can get a bit irritating but is something I got used to after a while.
Overall I love my Kindle. It's all my books, my CD player, radio, mini office tool and lots lots more, all at a fantastic price.
Thanks for reading!
Summary: Love it, don't know what I'd do without it now!
