Really good alternative to hoiking around a bag (or suitcase!) full of books!

Advantages: Lightweight, holds loads of books, buying books easy and immediate.
Disadvantages: Not the same as having a real book in your hands. It's just not.
I love gadgets and as soon as I saw this advertised on Amazon I wanted it! The Kindle is similar to the Sony reader however while the Sony reader holds up to 160 books on it's hard drive (you can save some on a memory stick) the Kindle holds a massive 1500 (approx) books. Very impressive.
I read a lot and this is an excellent item for holidays etc to save on luggage space as well as to stick in your bag to take on train journeys/bus trips/shopping when you stop for coffee etc. This is a lightweight product and very thin too, thinner than I was expecting (which I thought was a good thing!) about 1/3 inch thick. It does not weigh much either, weighing in at 10.2oz which is less than a normal paperback.
To switch the Kindle on there is a small sliding button to the top left of the device which you simply slide to the right to switch on. To switch off the Kindle you do the same ie slide the button to the right. When you first switch the Kindle on it should open with the full user guide (which is saved on the device) - it also comes with a very short hardcopy guide on how to start the Kindle up. The Kindle is only provided with an American plug, however it comes with a usb cable which you can connect into your computer to charge etc, so this should not be a problem for **most** people.
Reading a book is very easy (and I found the first time very exciting!!!) - you order and within a couple of minutes the book pops onto your home screen. You then use your mini '5 way controller' to move the highlight to the book of your choice, then press the 5 way controller down and voila you *should* be on the first page of your book. Happy reading...
There are two buttons on the left of the Kindle which are 'Prev page' and 'Next page' which you obviously use to move forwards and backwards through the book you are reading. On the right side of the Kindle you also have a 'Next page' button and a 'Home' button, which takes you to your home page. There is also a 'Menu' button which does various things, the most important, I find, is 'bookmark your page'(!) and also you would access the Kindle store. The 'Back' button re-traces your steps on your Kindle. There is also a text key (Aa) on the keyboard to the front of the Kindle which is useful for changing the size of your words (if you lend the device to your Mum who can't see very well!!) and also fonts. The keyboard uses up the bottom 1/4 of the Kindle and is generally used to look up books in the Kindle store.
There is quite a large range of books available (which you will need to order from Amazon.com rather than Amazon.co.uk) that can be sent wirelessly, as well as newspapers and magazines. I have only used this a few times since getting it for Christmas, however my experience is that it would be best to look on the internet on your normal computer to pick your books and then order them via your computer or go onto your Kindle just to order. It is possible and easy to find and buy your books direct from your Kindle, however it (understandably) is not as quick on the web as a normal computer is. Once purchased I have found the book is delivered to your device within a few minutes. There is no problem with speed when turning the pages on this, just as fast as if you were reading a 'real' book.
I have read a couple of books on it so far and was surprised at how easily I forgot that I was reading from an electronic device and not paper! The screen does not glare and really does look like light grey paper. I would recommend this as a very convenient way to carry and store books, however I don't think anything will ever replace a real paper book and this is the only reason my overall rating is 4*!
Summary: Excellent piece of kit if, like me, you are always toteing round a few books you have on the go.
