Apple iPad 3 Wi-Fi 16 GB

Apple iPad 3 Wi-Fi 16 GB
Advantages: Fun, quick, lots of apps
Disadvantages: Expensive, overheats
The 3rd Generation Ipad is much like the Ipad2 but with some improvements, as you would expect. I have never owned any of the models before so cannot make comparisons, rather just comment as I found it.
The weight and dimensions:
Height - 241.2mm
Width - 185.7mm
Depth - 9.4mm
Weight - 652g
Mine is black, but it is also available in white for the same price. I have the basic model which is the 16gb Wi-Fi model priced at £399. It is also available in 32gb and 6gb for £80 and £160 more respectively - that's an awful lot of money for memory and is one of the things I dislike most about Apple.
The biggest selling point Apple have with the new iPad3 is that it has Retina display which basically means that everything is crystal clear. It does seem to mean that photographs are incredibly clear (especially for a tablet device) and that images on things like apps are nice and bright. This is helped by the massive 2048x1536 pixel resolution which is twice that of its predecessor. The other thing about the display is that it has a fingerprint resistant coating which does seem to be quite effective - you don't get those marks hat can appear on screens from repetitive pressing in the same spot, although it isn't a miracle worker - you do have to wipe I clean occasionally!
The camera is excellent and is where much of the new technology has been aimed for this device. It is what they call an iSight (do you see what they have done there?!) camera which is 5 megapixels with various functions (autofocus, face detection in stills) as well as HD video recording with audio. It is pretty impressive and I have found pictures to be of excellent quality. To be honest I think this is probably wasted effort because the device is just too clunky to use as a camera - it is uncomfortable to hold and you look a bit daft waving it around. I have used it for fun stuff and it is great for that because there are plenty of apps and things that let you mess around with the pictures afterwards, but as a serious camera? I don't think so.
There are a lot of things that are good about the iPad3. Despite my initial desire to sell it and get the cash for it (it was worth £250 on one of these sell your stuff sites), I decided to keep it for a while and have a play with it. I now love I and wouldn't be without it.
On a basic level, I love the size of it - I like that I can play various games and surf the internet and see everything clearly without having to squint like I do with my Samsung Galaxy phone (which has now been relegated to my second favourite toy!). You can see the whole of a page at once, if for example you are surfing the internet, which means you don't have to scroll around to get all of the information from a page. It is great fun playing things like Song Pop and Draw Something in big! It makes it much easier to play them.
The battery life is pretty good. I have read others say that it isn't so, but I have found that it more than exceeds the specifications. When you get the device from new it is already almost fully charged which is great. There was nothing worse than getting a new toy and having to wait 12 plus hours to be able to play with it whilst it charged. Not so with the iPad3 - you get instant gratification! The specs say that you get 10 hours surfing the web and playing apps and so on, but I have found that I probably get a little bit more than that in some cases which is good. Charging it is easy to with the power adapter.
The app store is pretty good, although I'll say that it doesn't seem to be as extensive as the Android store does. It is easy to use and you can differentiate between apps that are best for iPhone and iPad so it is simple to narrow down your searches.
Despite my rather scary addiction to the iPad3, there are some problems that I have found with it. Firstly is the weight. It is pretty heavy, which for general use isn't too bad, but I find that for continued use I have to rest it on something because it is just too heavy to hold. I would imagine that this would become a problem when you want to do things like read a book on it. Whilst the words would be crystal clear, your arm would be at risk of falling off from the weight! Compared to a Kindle, it is just too heavy and cumbersome to use as an e-reader.
Secondly there are issues with it overheating. I was sat out in the garden with it when we last had some sunshine and after about ten minutes, the device stopped working and came up with a message telling me that it was too hot and I had to cool it down before using it again. The iPad3 wasn't in direct sunlight so I thought this was pretty poor. Makes it pretty much pointless if you want to take it on holiday somewhere hot! I also find that it gets quite hot with general use and that I can't hold it if I have been playing games with it for a period of time (actually not that long, it can happen after just ten minutes or so). When I looked into this further, I would seem that I am not the only one suffering this. There are reams and reams of complaints like it on the internet and it would seem that Apple's response is to deny that there is anything wrong. In fact when I went into the Apple store I was met with a response worthy of a politician:
Me: 'My iPad is overheating is there anything I can do about it?'
Apple person: 'If you think it is overheating I can book you in for an appointment with a genius and they'll give you a new one if there is a problem'
Me: 'Is this a common problem?'
Apple person: 'If you think it is overheating we can have a look at it for you'
Me: 'But if you give me a new one wouldn't that still overheat'
Apple person: 'Not necessarily, but if you said it was overheating we'd look at that too and replace it if necessary'.
Thirdly, if you don't have access to Wi-Fi, the device would be pretty much pointless as so many of the things that you do on it (apps in particular) require an internet connection. Fortunately we have access to Wi-Fi at home so it isn't a problem but if you don't it really would be redundant. The speed of connection is pretty good though - surfing the internet is much quicker than on my phone for example.
The main issue I have with the iPad3 (and it is my issue with all Apple products) is the price. £399 is an awful lot of money and to be honest I'm not sure that it is worth it. Sure it is a great toy and I wouldn't be without it now that I have it, but it just isn't good enough at anything to warrant that kind of money. If you wanted to take pictures, you get a camera. If you wanted to read books, you'd be better off with an e-reader. If you want to use Office, you'd be better off with a lap top or a note book. For me it is a good all-rounder, but it doesn't excel at any of these things, so it is an expensive price to pay. The cost doesn't stop there either. Accessories are mind bogglingly expensive and you can't cut corners. Thanks to the design of the camera, you can't use the cheaper cases available for earlier models because they don't fit properly so you are left with the choice of paying at least £40 to protect your iPad3.
Overall I would say that the iPad3 is a fantastic toy, but it certainly isn't perfect and at that price, you would really have to weigh up the pros and cons to see if there isn't a better choice for you out there!
Summary: Still my favourite toy, but not perfect and I din't pay for it!
