Apple is one of the most popular brand in this technological age and I, like any other tech-savvy people, am a big fan of their products. However, I must say that I have my doubts about the success of this product when it first comes out. Then, I already have a iphone, so I my thoughts are along the lines of 'umm....just a big iphone'. Nevertheless, I have been proven wrong after using this. After all, this is the product that has revolutionized the future of tablet computers.
I am extremely lucky in the aspect that I got this ipad for free; well to be correct, I won this product in a prize draw. In my whole life, I have hardly won grand prizes and I was over the moon when they announced my name. The prize draw was done by my university and only for people who's taking part in the launch of new virtual programme used in scientific teaching. However, the product is retailed for £300 at the moment, it used to be more, around £450-500, when it first come out. Also, at this moment, the sale of Ipad the first generation is pretty rare as most people tend to go for Ipad 2 instead.
My experience with this product has been more than satisfactory. Firstly, I love the fact the sensitivity of the touch screen is one of the best quality that is available in the market. It is very responsive and just a light touch would do the job.
One of my main uses of iPad is to read online journals, books and news. There are a variety of applications available to do the job; but two of the best Apps are iBooks and Kindle app. One of the common complaints is that iPad uses LED backlight and thus can be harmful to your eyes. I believe that's one of the main reasons why Amazon Kindle is popular for avid readers compared to iPad. However, from my experience, I have to say the backlight doesn't bother me much, mainly because the intensity of the backlight can be adjusted to my liking. Sometimes, I read for like 3-4 hours and I personally don't feel any problems with my eyes, expect feeling tired as normal.
Another handy application is Mail, which you can use to check your emails, send a quick reply in the same way you would do with an iphone. I love the fact I can as many email accounts as possible and all new emails from them would be pushed towards this apps. Very handy and saves me so much time as I have quite a lot of emails for various uses: i.e. university, family, work and general.
Apple products wouldn't be Apple-like if they don't have music applications. Ipod app is one of my favourite and selection of tracks is easy and the menu is very similar to that one in iphone. Another highly used App in my case is the 'youtube' app, especially when I'm out and about and want to watch programmes/music video and whatnot.
Browsing the web with iPad is very easy and can do so like you would on a laptop. However, the main complaint form me is the fact that flash player can't be installed. I'm a bit disappointed in that respect. Hopefully, they would improve this problem for future generations of iPads. My other problem with web browsing with an iPad is that the maximum no. of tabs that can be opened at any one time is 9 tabs, which may seem a lot. However, I'm used to opening tabs after tabs, especially when I have to compare websites or texts for my uni work. In that respect, a maximum of 9 tabs is not enough for me. However, asides from the problems I've mentioned, web browsing with an iPad is very easy and handy for those always on the move.
Additionally, there are many many applications, that can either be installed for free or at a cost, are available from iTunes app store.
As for the battery life, it has an acceptable duration I would say. It doesn't have a long battery life and I need to recharge my iPad everyday, especially after intensive usage. For instance, 3-4 hours of reading would take about 40-50% of the battery life. However, I must point out that I've been using my iPad for a little over a year and the battery life tends to shorten with prolonged usage.
Overall, my experience with this product has been more than satisfactory despite a few drawbacks with its functions. I love my iPad but I don't think this can be a perfect substitute for a laptop. Personally, I'm more efficient with an actual keyboard and thus I mostly do my work with my laptop. However, recreationally, this is the product that will provide you with hours of fun and more. Finally, I would like to say it's so much more than a big iPhone in terms of what you can do with it.
Thank you for reading. :) x
Summary: Great product but get the next generation one, or the 3rd generation.......
