Apple iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 64 GB
Advantages: Small device that has so much to offer
Disadvantages: Possibly the price, particularly with the higher memory capacity models
When the iPad was first launched, I was extremely skeptical about the whole idea. Firstly, how could something so small do so much? Secondly, why is it shockingly expensive? And finally, what can it do that my MacBook and iPhone can't?
After months of resisting and testing whenever I went past an Apple store, I bought one. On arrival, I was feeling excited yet curious about what this was going to do for me. I began to think it was a waste of money.. But below is why I changed my mind.
In answer to my first rhetorical question, a device so small really can do what it claims. As I took it out of its well designed box and looked at the large shiny screen I couldn't wait to try it out! After setting it up, which involved connecting to a Mac/PC.. A somewhat similar set up to an iPod, I got stuck in.
It does take some getting used to, I will admit, as this device is something that we have never seen before. It completely changes the way we do our day to day activities. There are so many capabilities crammed into this tiny, thin device.. I still can't quite believe it. The iPad means we can take it where ever we go, and use it whenever we want.
So onto my second question, the price. I still do believe that the price is extortionate (I paid £530 for a 16GB with Wi-fi and 3G) especially when you think what you could get for your money if you went clothes shopping! But this device, I believe, is worth every penny. You really do get what you pay for.
What it does....
So, when you press the on/off button in the top right hand corner of the device, you're presented with a screen that is the same as those on an iPhone or iPod, only larger. This is when you can see the amazing quality of the graphics, they are excellent. When you slide to unlock, you get the home screen, again similar to the iPhone/iPod. This is where the fun begins!
Safari - The same surfing experience as using a Mac, literally. High speed internet, with a connection to Wi-fi or 3G, you can open tabs to allow multitasking. Again the graphics are great and its just a really quick and easy experience.
Photos - This to me was great.. The photo albums appear in a stack of photos and if you pink the screen they open slightly, so you can see what images are in the album and then you can fully open it. Its difficult to explain unless you can see it, a video can be seen on the Apple website.
Youtube - As if you were using a PC/Mac and on the Youtube website, the same experience! You can listen to music or videos, or just small clips - the choice is yours.
iTunes - An Apple classic. You can download the latest music or listen to your favourite albums.
Email - I love this app. Its so easy to use, but different to anything else we've ever see. You can view your mail, turn the iPad on its side to get a horizontal view, then turn it upside.. then turn it round again. The screen ages with the angle at which its being held. This works on all applications, but for me it is especially useful on the email program.
App store - This is where you can change your iPad to suit your personality and needs. Download apps from games, to business related apps. Whatever you need you can almost guarantee it'll be in the app store.
Calender - Allows you to add notes on certain dates to remind yourself of a certain event to be sure you wont miss it! You can view the calender in a daily or monthly perspective.
These are just a few of the things that iPad can do.
To my final question - what can it do that my iPhone or MacBook can't? Nothing, really. They are all designed to have similar apps and programs, but the thing thats different about iPad is the way in which all of these apps are experienced, on this small yet graphical, tiny yet amazing device.
Battery life hasn't been an issue as it has been with the other Apple products that I own. I can use it for a good amount of time before it needs to be charged.
Summary: Such a different experience and one that is definitely worth investing in
