Asus Transformer Pad TF300T
Advantages: Versatility. Long battery life. Ease of use.
Disadvantages: No handbook, although this can be downloaded from the website and is extremely comprehensive.
As a self confessed novice to the tablet world, I was looking for something which was easy to use, small enough to carry around and take on holiday, robust enough to cope with my clumsy fingers and also with a long battery life.
I have previously had 2 laptops, one of which was 13 inch but even this proved too heavy and cumbersome for foreign trips and generally travelling on planes.
I find the transformer ideal in this respect.
Although it is bigger than the average tablet, the fact that it can easily be separated into its 2 constituent parts makes it very versatile and convenient to use.
In addition, the combined battery life of both tablet and laptop parts is an astonishing 13hours.
I have the choice of using the tablet only, for example when gaming or watching downloaded video, or using the transformer with keyboard attached when typing or indeed to back up the tablet battery.
(The keyboard will provide up to 8 hours of additional battery life)
Ease of use was a prerequisite for me and I was not disappointed in this respect.
As an Android device,( Android version 4.0) it has access to a huge range of applications and games, many of them free, and its fast enough to cope with any of the games I have tried so far.
Screen resolution is excellent and bright enough to put my Acer Travelmate laptop to shame.
Despite its modest size the sound is of a reasonable quality but if you really want to enjoy it at its best, connect a decent set of headphones. I use a pair of Sennheiser noise reduction cans myself.
The transformer has a mini HDMI slot so it can be connected to an HDMI TV for playing movies and other audio /video. This is how I watch Netflix when I'm at home or anywhere else which has an HDMI.
Wifi connection is a breeze and I've now used this in numerous places including abroad with no problems whatsoever.
There are 2 cameras, a webcam and an 8 megapixel camera which takes great photos and video, although it is only really practical to use this one with tablet on its own. Again ease of use is great, just point and click, and the quality of the end product does not disappoint. Indeed when last on holiday I didn't use my digital camera at all. However, because it has a full size SD card slot, photos can also be transferred from your digital camera with ease.
In my view there are very few negatives to talk of with this device.
Yes, it is heavier than an ordinary tablet and doesn't exactly fit into a pocket, but it comes apart easily, and the 10 inch screen gives a more than adequate viewing experience, so you can put the keyboard away in your hand luggage and use the tablet section only, although admittedly one handed use does get a bit tiring.
Also, with the keyboard connected, you also have to be aware that it can topple over, depending on the angle you have the screen at, but this is a minor quibble.
All in all therefore, I would thoroughly recommend this product.
Summary: Excellent value for money
