I went online to www.aximsite.com and found a thread (*) there where others had done exactly the same, however several had managed to get Dell to replace the unit free of charge, this usually involved speaking to a supervisor (although they would not admit there was a design fault).

Dell Axim X3: WARNING! Be careful with synch cable interface (328 words)

The main purspose of this review is to warn others to be extremely careful when attaching a synch/charge cable to the connector at the base of the unit. The pin connector on the base of the unit is quite fragile and can easily be broken, if so Dell say they will not repair the unit but that you have to buy a new one - BUT read on. I inadvertantly broke my connector when connecting a charger cable to the unit and thereafter could not charge it. I emailed Dell but they said it was not covered by the warranty as I had caused the damage - I was of the opinion that this was a design flaw.
