Disadvantages: No additional storage space
After waiting nearly 3 months for this item to be in stock and getting it delivered to me, I finally received it, I was very excited I have to say. I hope I wouldn't be disappointed after waiting this long to get it. I was not impressed of the packaging, but apart from that I am impressed. I got this after looking around for something that I could play music on, my partner came across this and decided to buy me it, its nothing more and nothing less of a mini pc. And because I don't really use my pc a lot, this is ideal for me to do what I want to do, and save electric in the meantime. It's a shame I had to wait along time to get it, but worth the wait all the same.
** PACKAGING **
Like I mentioned I was not impressed by the packaging, the nexus came in a outer cardboard box which was double its size, so was slopping around in the box. The nexus itself came in its own stylish black box, with a cardboard wrapper around it, which the nexus was on the front of it, along with a few details about the nexus. I was a bit weary of opening the box as I thought with it slopping about in the outer packaging it might have been damaged in some way, but fortunately it wasn't. The wrapper on the box was very tight to get off and took me a while to pulled it off, but if your not bothered into keeping this, then its just as easy to cut it off. The nexus was snugged into a black stylish box, along with its accessories.
** WHAT'S IN THE BOX? **
In the box you will find the nexus tablet, 3 pin plug, USB cable, the warranty, and a brief instruction book, on how to fix the plug together as it does come in 3 bits, but easy to assemble, the USB does connect to the plug for charging on mains, and will serve as a USB cable to copy from computer or other devices and vice versa.
** THE NEXUS STYLE **
The nexus is a beautiful, slim, and sleek tablet. It is black in colour with a silver rim around the edge of the tablet; the screen is very shiny and can be a nuisance when using it as it will have fingerprints all over it, but easy to clean away. The back of the nexus is made from a rubbery material for easy gripping when handling it. There are only 4 things on the edges of the nexus that are for use, which is the on/off switch, volume, connection for charging and the headphones socket.
The nexus has a lovely 7 inch screen which is not too big and not to small, although you might have to zoom in on most things which is easy to do. It has a nice quad core processor which enables you to do many tasks at once and doesn't alter your performance; it is more powerful than my desktop computer in that respect. Because the nexus is lightweight you can carry it around where ever you go, it fits lovely in my handbag, but to big to fit into a pocket.
You also have a 16gb storage space on there, so can fit quite a few books, games, music, and videos on there, depending on what you are putting on there the space might not last long, and because this tablet doesn't support the additional storage space by memory card, then that is all you have to play with.
** SWITCHING ON AND SETTING UP **
Once you have switched on the nexus by pressing the small button to the top right of the nexus, the screen will come on in seconds, which amazed me how fast it came on and was ready to set up, my computer takes minutes before it gets to the login screen. You will be asked to choose your preferred language once that is set its times to set you up on the internet which was easy and didn't take long to do.
Now setting up a network connection for you to browse the internet will defer with people, as it does depend if you have a network connection all ready to connect to, if you don't you do need to set one up by following the on screen instructions, if you do have a connection ready and waiting, click on it, then put in the password required to get it connected. Then there you are, all ready for browsing the internet.
The internet is wireless which is a good and bad thing, good thing is you can connect to the internet anywhere where there is a wireless connection, bad thing is you might not be able to connect, without a password, or you can loose connection, so you will have to keep trying to connect. I have not yet had this issue but I do know when having a wireless connection on my computer we experienced loss of connection a lot of the time and it was a pain.
You also have to sign into a google account if you don't have one then you will have to set one up. You will need an google account to access the store, All your contacts, emails, events are automatically added, and all ready to use.
** HOME SCREENS **
You have 3 home screens to set up as you wish, add widgets, games, and apps, it's entirely up to you how you decided to set them up. Any icons or widgets can be edited by just by holding your finger on the icon until it gives you a choice of what you want to do. You can remove anything on your home screen just by holding your finger on the icon and dragging to the top of the screen where there you will see a remove icon. You can move icons between screens, hold the icon, and drag it to the edge of the screen until the new home screen is in view then place the icon where you want it. You can easily change the wallpaper of your home screens by holding a finger on the screen until a menu pops up, then you can choose your desired wallpaper, whether it will be one that you have took, one you have uploaded, or one that is already on the nexus.
** NOTIFICATIONS **
You will see all notifications at the top of the screen, drag your finger down the screen from the top, and it will open all notifications, off apps, games, emails, anything you have running. You can remove all notifications by clicking on the 3 lines. Clicking on any of the notifications will open them so you can view it, whether it is email, game, or an app, or even a reminder. If you have your volume on you will a ding sound when you receive a notification so you will be aware you have something to check out.
** BROWSING AROUND **
On your home screen certain icons are at the bottom, these will allow you to access certain apps, games, music, books and internet. So everything is very simple to use and find. Just clicking an icon will sometimes bring up another list of things, click on which ever you want to use and there you go, it's that simple. Icons include things like
G+ clicking this will open things like google plus, youtube, earth, talk, currents and people. Although I don't tend to use anything in here as it does not interest me.
Chrome icon, gives you the internet browsers, you can bookmark, view most visited sites, and other devices.
You then have your book library, this is where all your books are stored, I only have the ones that have come with it so far, but I do tend to get more on this eventually.
The next icon when pressed will let you view everything you have downloaded and installed, its basically the main menu for everything on your nexus.
Then you will come across the films section, this is where your films will be stored, whether it be music videos or movies, they will all be stored here.
Headphones icon gives you the chance to play all your music that you have download, or upload to your nexus.
Then you have the little shopping bag which allows you to go shopping at the google store, a lot of things are free so take a look, I have downloaded things from here and it is very simple to use and download and install things.
You can view the time, battery levels and signal strength of your connection to the internet, at the top of the screen, you can edit these just by holding your finger on them until they pop up another menu, then choose what you want to edit, and put in the relevant changes.
Also you will also have 3 more icons at the bottom of the screen these are your navigation buttons, just clicking these will let you navigate, either going back to previous page, looking at the last things visited or opened, which these can be removed if you don't want them here, just simply hold and click remove from list, and the middle button is taking you back to the home screen.
** SOUNDS & GRAPHICS **
The sounds of games are excellent not so good with music as it can sound a little tinny, but what do you want? Its ideal for me so it don't bother me, it is only tinny when your playing something you know has a touch of base with it. But for gaming and video's it's great and couldn't ask for better. Now the graphics are excellent to say it is a tablet, I was not expecting the graphics to be as good as they are. Games look really clear and crisp, videos are the same and great quality, I couldn't ask for anything better, I normally use this for games so I am happy over all with the sound and graphics of this tablet. You can adjust the sound by the volume button on the side of the nexus and you can either use the screen to turn it up/down or by using the button. I am unsure weather you can toggle with the graphics in anyway as I have not bothered with them as they are good as they are.
** SHOPPING AT THE STORE **
I am sure you need a google account to access this store, you will find most things here book's videos, games and apps, free and paid ones, but in order to pay for things obviously you will need to set up a registered credit card with them. The downloading and installing of the games and apps are simple, simply click download, and it will download and will automatically install to the tablet, an icon will appear on the home screen in which you can move if you wish, jus click on the icon will allow you to access the game or app. Downloading books on the other hand I am not sure of as I have not yet purchased any books, but I am assuming they will go straight into the library once being purchased, I will eventually buy books to go on here.
I have shopped on here to download free games and apps, and they run smoothly and with no problems at all, depending on your internet connection will determine the time it will take to download, you can also uninstall things as you wish from within the settings tab.
** FREEBIES **
When browsing around, I noticed that I got a few freebies which I was excited about. I got 4 books to read, plus the nexus guide, the transformers film to watch, a few apps to try out, and the option of getting £15 free to use in the google play store when entering my credit card details, although I have not got around to doing this yet.
** AVAILABILITY AND PRICE **
I bought this tablet from the studio24 catalogue at £199 for the 16gb, its £159 for the 8gb one. You can also buy this from argos for the same price.
** FINAL THOUGHTS **
I have to say I am not disappointed with this item at all, I love using it and I find it easy to find what I want, I also like the fact that the screen is protected from scratches, although I am not trying this. The storage is a little low, but I know I can transfer things to my computer if I don't want to remove them. The battery life is great but that does depend on what your doing, I charged it up the other day and I get normally a few days wear out of it before it needs charging up again. It's a powerful machine to say the least and I am happy with it, especially with the multi touch screen, which comes in handy when sending emails. It does come with a camera too, 2 mega pixels although it is something I don't use on it as I have my phone that takes all my pictures.
