“ Handspring Visor Platinum - Palm OS 3.5.2H - MC68VZ328 33 MHz - RAM: 8 MB - IrDA - graphite „
I spent several months deliberating over the many different models and options available on the market before purchasing the Handspring. And in fact it wasnt until i read a review of all handhelds, in which the Visor Deluxe came out on top, that i decided on this model. The Visor range is slightly cheaper than most of its rivals, and quite honestly that just adds to the appeal. The Platinum version offers more performance for the extra £40. It runs the Palm Operating system so software compatibility is not a problem, and having seen many of my friends opt for a Windows based palm i dont regret my choice. A whole host of features have enabled me to get my life in order, Calendar, Address book, email, reminders, to-do list, everything and more!!!! Performance is superb and there have been no problems connecting it to my Windows2000 pc. The leather case supplied with the visor is a little basic so i purchased a bi-fold case which means i dont have to take it out of the case if i want to use it, and it may also be quite handy to purchase a second USB cradle (one for home one for work) so you dont have to carry the cradle to and from the office each day. This is a superb handheld, with all the features you need and a few extra!
A Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) is perhaps one of the most useful bits of electronic kit that anyone could ever own and you could do a lot worse than the Handspring Visor Platinum. As well as doing all the usual stuff that you can do with any Palm OS based PDA it also has a few unique features. Firstly the hot sync cradle connects to your computer via a USB cable. This allows much faster transfers than the slow serial link that comes with the Palm computers. However for some reason on the Platinum handspring have set the default speed to 56kbps, although this can be adjusted to take advantage of the full bandwidth available over USB. For those people who don't have a computer with a USB port, Handspring also offer an optional serial link. The second main advantage of having a Handspring over a Palm is that the Handspring has a Springboard port that allows you to plug in a range of add-in modules such as a digital camera or a Blue Tooth transceiver. This gives the Handspring a much better defined upgrade path. One of the problems with the Handspring range is that the Operating System is not flash upgradeable so you will never be able to fully upgrade to the latest palm OS when it becomes available. As it happens the Platinum is already running the latest version :) The Platinum is reportedly 50% faster than the Deluxe model and if you put them side by side application launching and scrolling is much faster and smoother on the Platinum. You interact with the Platinum using a kind of shorthand called Graffiti that you write onto the screen using a stylus. You pick up the symbols fairly fast and you can always revert to an onscreen keyboard. However the area on the screen where you write the Graffiti can become scratched quite easily so it is a good idea to buy some screen protectors which stick onto the screen and you replace them every month or so. If you don't want to buy them then you can make your own by cutti
ng a bit of OHP transparency to a little larger than the size of the screen and slotting it under the plastic edges of the case. Battery life is reasonable and they have lasted me on average 3 to 4 weeks per set. Although the silver coloured case is not as stylish as say the Palm Vx it is functional and still looks rather cool. Weight of the machine is not a problem and you hardly notice it in your pocket. Alarm sounds can be quiet and it is easy to miss an alarm if you are in a noisy place. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone who needs to organise their life.
The Handspring Visor, the first infinitely expandable handheld computer, is now even faster. In fact, the Visor Platinum is 50% faster than the Visor Deluxe. The Visor Platinum gives you enhanced power, speed and performance so you can access all your data and view crisp grayscale graphics without the wait. And, like the Visor, it comes with the unique Springboard expansion slot, so you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem or even a phone. Best of all, it is Plug and Play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works!
If you're one of those people who uses lots of RAM, keeps tons of records, plays games or uses apps that have high-performance requirements, the Visor Platinum has the very speed you need. Now you can access all your data without the wait. And the grayscale graphics - with 16 shades of gray - are so crisp that every picture is as clear as day. What's more, since the Visor Platinum is based on the latest Palm OS, it's got new usability, security and navigation features, too.
