Advantages: Small, fully featured

Disadvantages: an organiser, not a mobile PC

When my old sharp "organiser" died with a knackered dot matrix screen a year and a bit ago I decided to replace it with one of those nice handwriting recognition organisers that id seen around. A quick flick through the argos catalogue showed a couple at the £80 mark but alittle more research showed that these didnt take your handwriting at all, you just used the supplied stylus to tap the letter keys displayed on the screen. More research revealed the palm pilot range but also showed the jump in cost - i decided not to bother. Would you believe the very next day i spotted a collegue with one, 10 minutes later i was sold. The graffiti hand writing recognition is so easy to learn that i was writing in sentances inside 5 minutes. It came with all the apps i needed, and i placed an order that afternoon for the palm IIIx (only the palm V was avaliable at the time, more money, less memory). When the unit arrived i spent alittle time setting up the pc "hotsync" software to work with my microsoft outlook and had all my info back in my organiser (now this is a REAL organiser) within 30 minutes. As the months went by i slowly explored all the software avaliable for the palm (www.palmgear.com) and now have the thing nearly full of useful tools, apps, and games. I use it every day for things as simple as making appointments in my diary to getting phone number and read webpages that i have downloaded to my pilot every morning. Things have moved on now since i purchased my pilot and I think id opt for the palm Vx with 8mb and a slightly faster processor or possibly look at the IIIc with its colour screen. Ive played with wince and pocketpc devices and found them slow and un-responsive compaired to my palm - this is one of the best purchases i ever made.
