Disadvantages: Old OS, frequent crashes
I bought my Palm Tx 18 months ago now and have got great use out of it. First things first: this is not a device to buy if you are not tech-savvy as you need to do a lot of hacking away at it in order to get the most from it.
The unit itself is beautifully constructed, with a gunmetal blue finish to its thin casing. The screen is bright and easy to read. To be honest it has now had its day technology-wise as most new-to-market machines will have more processing power, integrated GPS etc.
Having said that this unit is well-specced for the price with integrated wi-fi, bluetooth, SD card reader (not high-capacity HDSD, so 2 GB maximum) and IR communications capability.
The main problems with it are the faulty screen digitizer. This is a known problem that has resulted in many returns in the Palm community- after prolonged usage the digitizer that registers your pen movements on the screen begins to transmit false signals to the machine- which is very annoying as area of the screen become 'dead' to your stylus.
There is an incredible amount of software available for these machines- I am a medical student and use it all day on the wards to look things up, check obscure words in dictionaries, browse email, use the bluetooth to my gps receiver and run TomTom to navigate around...
Because technology has moved on (the operating system on the Palm is now 5 years old), these units can be picked up very cheaply on ebay. If you need lots of information at your fingertips on a machine that can run films, music, internet and all manner of other utilities- this is for you.
Summary: Excellent value pocket computer
