Advantages: Light, Loads of free aps

Disadvantages: Not colour

I bought my Palm Vx 3 years ago now in the US, before they we available in the UK. Why listen to me? Well I used mine every day in those 3 years and a lot of that was hooked up to my mobile phone using it professionally.

What I?m going to tell you:

1) Quick overview
2) What you can do with it with a little other bits and bobs
3) How you can get one cheap

1) Quick overview

The Palm Vx is light and discrete. Has 8Mb of memory and loads of applications available on the web.

It has a built in rechargeable battery that lasts for a few days between charges and charges while it is sitting in it?s docking station. From there you can synchronise it with your PC (e-mail, calendar, contacts??.).

You input using a special form of handwriting recognition. It takes a little getting used to, but once you?re done it?s very quick.

One of the best things about this was it?s size and weight. Small is the word. You don?t get bogged down with it.

2) What you can do with it with a little other bits and bobs

The 1st thing to say is that my life was in that puppy!! You?ll be surprised how much will go in there and I never got to be more than 70% full.

There are thousands of applications out there on the Internet you can use this thing with. Anything you can think of!

But I mostly used mine for appointments (synchronised with Outlook on my work PC) and Internet connectivity on the move.

You can hook-up to the Internet using a mobile with an IR port. From there I used it to get mail, surf the web and the biggest use was Yahoo Instant messenger. Great for boring meetings!! Even better if your phone is GPRS enabled. That way you only pay for the data. This meant that I could stay on IM all meeting and it not cost me a penny if on one wanted to talk to me.

You can also turn them into a GPS receiver with street maps by buying a gizmo to fit on the back (see
later).

3) How you can get one cheap

They are getting sold second hand now on auction sites. Try E-bay for instance. I just sold mine there (why ? because work is giving me a new ipaq ? heavy but it has Bluetooth). Expect to pay about £100 ? you may get one for as little as £80. You can also pick-up a few accessories, like the GPS receiver I was talking about.
