Advantages: innovative design, reliable, sturdy

Disadvantages: noisy, needs to be plugged into mains

I will be honest: the main reason I bought this hard drive (over any other external hard drive) was because it looks like a Lego brick. What a fantastic idea! The whole LaCie range has been well designed appearance-wise - there's a very sleek black one out recently that I'm currently coverting - and this is no exception.

But enough about what it looks like.
I find it fairly fast to transfer images from and to, although I use it mainly for backup so I'm not using it all the time. I think last time I backed up it took about 30-45 mins to back up 50GB(ish) of data. Please bear in mind that's an ESTIMATE but it should hopefully give you an approximate idea.
If you are moving small groups of files, even if they're hefty files, it's still almost instantaneous moving - about the same speed as moving things around on your computer.

I think you have to plug it in to the mains to use it - at least, that's what the instructions implied, although I'll be honest and say I haven't tried it without - which obviously is a downside if you want it to be portable as you then need to carry an extra cable besides your laptop, laptop cable, hard disc drive and USB cable to connect the HDD.

Another downside is the noise. It is quite loud, emitting a high-pitched whirr - depends if you're used to background noise though, I don't find it very noticeable when the computer's on, only when I've shut the computer down and think "what on earth is that noise still going?"

Price-wise, I remember it being a little higher than the competition (competition of same size in GB, that is) when I bought it (like I said, I was willing to pay more for the fact that it looked like a Lego brick), but that was a couple of years ago now and you'd be best off researching yourself what prices are like compared to similar products on the market.

Oh and reliability - I have never had it fail in the last two years, so it's been very reliable for me, but then you couldn't exactly describe mine as heavy-duty usage.

Summary: quirky and fun but still a reliable LaCie product
