I would consider the 20GB hard drive the minimum memory storage to fully enjoy the Xbox 360 console. It is an essential accessory and much better and cost-effective than buying the memory units which are a tiny fraction of this memory size.

First let me just clear up a common misconception to avoid disappointment; a 20GB hard drive actually only consists of around 14GB that you can use for storing data. This is because game cache and other system information takes up 7GB in a 20GB hard drive.

To avoid having to buy a hard drive as an accessory, I recommend you just buy a Premium 360 with a 20GB or 60GB memory or an Elite which has a 120GB hard drive. This way, it comes with the package and works out at a better price.

The hard drive has many uses and you will find most of the space is taken up from using Xbox Live. There are all sorts of things to download which take up varying amounts of memory such as the largest downloads; Xbox Originals, demos and Arcade games, as well as gamer pictures, themes, map packs and different types of videos.

In terms of design, it looks like it should be on the 360 permanently. It fits on the top and is very thin. The colour scheme matches the console and also has a chrome edge to make it a little more stylish and match the disc tray. You don't have to install it; you simply clip it into place and takes a few seconds at most. To remove it, if you want to take it to a friend's house for example, you just push the small button and remove it.

Summary: If you bought an Arcade console then this is a must-have addition
