Advantages: Reliable. Fast. Good price.

Disadvantages: None.

INTRODUCTION:

I bought this for my parents PC to replace an ageing Seagate 40GB IDE hard drive that was slow and nowhere big enough anymore. It cost £44.21 inc VAT from eBuyer in May 2008. As it is SATA, I also had to get a PCI SATA card and I got the Value one from eBuyer for a few quid. It detected it first time and the driver was compatible so I can't complain.

PERFORMANCE:

Well, this is one impressive hard drive. To me, it seems to be faster than the Samsung Spinpoint F1 500GB in my much newer PC! The whole computer is very snappy to respond and generally boots up a lot faster than before. It is also very quiet. You can barely hear it spinning, even in this PC which is fairly on its way to becoming a "quiet" PC. It's certainly about 10 times quieter than the 40GB IDE Seagate it rerplaced and just as quiet as the Samsung Spinpoint's! The temperature seems to stay pretty low too, although I did put an inlet fan just in front of it to be safe- my parents sometimes forget to turn the computer off!

RELIABILITY:

I have been a fan of Seagate ever since my first Barracuda about 7 years ago. That one was a warranty replacement for a failed IBM Deathstar, errr I mean DeskStar, which in itself was a warranty replacement for a failed Maxtor Diamondmax. I still have that old Barracuda actually and its still going strong! Anyway, this is just the background for my faith in the reliability of Seagate Hard Drives. This one has only been in service for about 12 months now but Seagate provide a warranty of 5 years so it's worry free for a long time.

CAPACITY:

The 320GB storage space may, now, be actually a little on the small side compared to the mighty 1TB drives available. But for my parents this is perfect since it is always cheaper to get a smaller one and the only thing that really takes up any storage space for them is digital photos.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Just after I bought this hard drive I read an alarming review that said this series of Barracuda were apparently not very reliable and not as good as older series. Don't you believe it! This has given me no problems at all and I'm really glad I chose Seagate again.

Summary: The Barracuda 7200.10 320GB is as reliable as all Seagate drives and is faster than I was expecting.
