... my photos on disk as well. Some would say I should still have a backup of the backup, but you could argue that in-finitum. The MyBook is a neat, shiny black little box with a comforting blue light on the front. It stands on its side, about 16in high, 5in deep and 2in fat and I leave it tucked behind the screen. It has just a mains lead and an usb connection. The mains lead ends in a lightweight combined transformer/plug and is supplied with a decent length usb cable and I connect it to one of those inaccessible us...more

Premium Review Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 2.0 WDH1U10000 1 TB: Some pun on the Western Digital "My Book" 1TB (514 words)

It's now getting to the point where backing up my data to DVDs is simply impossible these days. I have nearly two hundred gigabytes of films and TV programmes stored on my PC and nearly thirty gigabytes of music as well as photos and other personal documents. With each DVD holding just short of five gigabytes, a full backup was going to be a) time-consuming and b) using sixty recordable DVDs. A better solution was some kind of mass storage device. There are plenty to choose from on the market, but out of all of them, the Western Digital My Book seemed to suit my needs best as Western Digital are a known and reasonably respected manufacturer of hard drives, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Peace of Mind (511 words)

Since first getting a digital camera I've become somewhat paranoid about how to safely store all my cherished and irreplaceable photos. Knowing how temperamental the average pc is, it is inevitable that one day you will turn it on and be presented with the dreaded blue screen and with no way of accessing your files. My answer to my worries was to discover the Western Digital My Book. I bought a 1TB unit, 1 Terabyte, which is 1,000 gigabytes. This will take some filling up, or you would think so. Whilst I know it still relies on a spinning disc but at least it is stand-alone from the pc. You can plug it into any old pc through an usb and all being ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 2.0 WDH1U10000 1 TB: A good product and an even better price (214 words)

The price is unbeatable given the capacity and the manufacturer's brand. Though is the cheap series of external HDDs from Western Digital the quality is very good. The drive looks good, nice glossy design and is solidly built. The install is straight forward, just plug it in and your PC should recognize right away. The drive is quiet (it makes some noise, but it isn't annoying at all) and runs relatively cool (my ex-external HDD from IOMEGA has way hotter even on mild usage). The only issue is that the USB2.0 interface is not the fastest thing around, but it is ok for data backup and operations that do not require considerable speed ... if you want speed than your ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Best 1TB drive on market for a good price (324 words)

I now have two of these drives. I bought one when they were first £130 and another now they are £80 and have found them to be both reliable and amazingly good. The hard drives have enver faield me, (and it never overheats. I have had this on constantly with my computer for weeks at a time.) I use these so much, and they have never occured to have any problems, even when nearing full capacity they run at good speeds. They powering up of the drive is fairly quick and doesnt take long at all, the write speeds are good and you can get rid of all the sortware it has and just use it normall ywith vista or XP automatically setecting it as a removable drive. The drive ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 2.0 WDH1U10000 1 TB: A really good piece of equipment (153 words)
by - written on 02/08/08 (Useful, 115 readings)

The model itself looks very stylish and modern sitting on your desk. When data is transferring, the blue bar is broken down into two separate lights that flash one after the other. When in idle, it just has one constant blue bar. The spin up time for the drive can sometimes by a nuisance when watching films, as although it is fairly fast, when returning to the film from the drive being idle, it jumps and skips until the drive has found the right speed and spot for the movie again. The heat produced is really quite minimal and just feels slightly warmer than the rest of your desk. When writing, the drive sometimes makes audible clicks which is quite offputting. There are ...  Read the complete review
