Advantages: Size, Colour,

Disadvantages: Small USB connector lead?

I was prompted to buy a personal portable hard drive after getting annoyed of carrying around memory sticks of varying sizes to carry my work/videos/music on. After looking into the various manufacturers of these, I opted to choose the Western Digital 250gn Passport drive as it can be powered through the Usb port on any computer, and in effect acts as one huge memory stick.

My hard drive arrived pre formatted to Fat32 which limits the file size you are able to transfer to 4Gb, however you can simply reformat the drive to NTFS enabling larger files to be transferred. The bundled software that arrives on the hard drive may be useful to someone, however in my case, I elected to wipe the drive, giving it the appearance of a large memory stick in my computer.

The hard drive is plug and play compatible, and does not need any drivers on any machines to operate it. I have successfully used this hard drive to connect to PC's, Macs and my PS3. The drive hardly makes any sound, and the only indication that you have that the drive is working is a tiny Led light located in the front panel next to the USB port.

I have the black version of the drive which does accumulate greasy fingermarks very easily, however its nothing that a wipe wont sort out. It is the same size as a British passport and is approx 1.5cm thick, meaning you can literally pop it into your pocket when on the move.

The drive works very well as an addition to any PC/Mac/Ps3 that needs extra storage or for peace of mind and the backup of files and folders. The bundled software on my hard drive did include a backup utility which i'm sure makes backing up files and folders very easily, and it can also sync outlook messages, so you can work on your email when not at your usual computer, and send them when you are.

A great little drive at around £50.
