Advantages: much storage, less weight and dimensions, it do not need AC adapter
Disadvantages: software not easy to use
Reasons for the purchase
I had to format my PC. In addition, my husband and I are big photo and music collectors, and with this way, we can easily store our photos and other files, which we do not need all time. We were thinking whether we buy 250 GB or 320 GB, and have decided for 320 GB, because of the size and the minimum difference between prices.
Packet contents
External HDD
USB cable 45 cm
Short installation instructions (only pictures) and guarantee information in 22 languages
Appearance
My Passport has a black plastic cover; you also can buy other colors like red, blue, white, green and pink. It has much small dimensions (0,590x 4,967 x 3,130 inch) and a weight of 0,40 pound.
Installation and usage
The installation is easy. I connect the My Passport by the provided USB cable with the PC, and the external HDD is thereby supplied with current. No AC adaptor is necessary. Beside the USB port of the external HDD, the USB symbol shines in white. Windows find the external HDD immediately and the auto start window opens. From there I reach the start screen (see photo below). Now I have the possibility to setup the software, which is pre installed on the external HDD on my PC. For this, I create a profile with password for myself. Now I can run the WDSync software, what is a little bit complicated for me. In addition, I did not find single files, like word documents; in this WDSync I could only synchronize folders.
But there is one mistake of this software, from the start screen of My Passport, I can easily join WD Sync Data from every user of My Passport, without join any password there. There you can simply create a folder with your name and copy the files by Copy/paste to the external HDD. This was the easy way for me. I had not to understand the software first for save my data. On the same way, I can also send the files back to my PC.
The copy from files is a little time-consuming. For photo folder with 1GB were 10min required. I do not know it is faster with the software, this was too complicated for me and I did not try. Now I have saved all my files, if sometimes something happen to my PC and I can easily get back. I can exit the Passport when I dont need.
Conclusion
I recommend this external HDD for everyone, who need extra storage for files or do not want have PC full with files, which are not needed all time.
