Western Digital My Passport Essential WDME2500 250 GB ... was prompted to buy a personal portable hard drive after getting annoyed of carrying around memory sticks of varying sizes to carry my work/videos/music on. After looking into the various manufacturers of these, I opted to choose the Western Digital 250gn Passport drive as it can be powered through the Usb port on any computer, and in effect acts as one huge memory stick. My hard drive arrived pre formatted to Fat32 which limits the file size you are able to transfer to 4Gb, however you can simply reformat the drive to NTFS enabling larger files to be transferred. So, the question is what separates this one from any of the others on the market? I think with these things it simply boils down to reliability. I have found that mostly they are easy to use and this one is no exception. It is ready to go as soon as you remove it from its packaging. No software installation is required although this may be dependant on the operating system you are using. I was using Window Vista and it popped up straight away. Western Digital make great portable hard drives and this has definitely been the best yet. 320GB of space for around £65 is a great deal, you get a handy portable hard drive for extra storage or backups and they also throw in the usb cable for free. It does include WD Sync as well but that will only work on PCs (even though this hard drive is suitable for Macs as well) The hard drive connects over USB 2.0 resulting in high speed data transfers (extremely quick compared to small usb flash drives) and means you don t need an external power supply to use this hard drive.
