Advantages: Easy to use, decent sound quality, transportable.
Disadvantages: Wear and tear.
These are the headphones that come as standard with all iPod MP3 players on the market, and that is also how I received mine.
The headphones are small in-ear bud-style headphones that are shaped to fit each ear. Each earphone is marked with a R or L to indicate in which ear it is supposed to be worn. Personally though I find it more comfortable to wear them the opposite way around! I like using in-ear headphones purely because of the size and convenience. It is easier to fit them into your handbag, you don't need to worry so much about them getting knocked around whilst in your bag, and you can still wear sunglasses or whatever while using them. That being said, in-ear speakers are no match for over-ear speakers when it comes to blocking out external noise. This means that when I'm outside on the street or in noisy environments I have to have my iPod turned up pretty loud to really hear the music over the external noise.
As a credit to the iPod headphones though there doesn't seem to be much distortion of the sound except at extreme volumes - and you shouldn't be listening to your music that loud anyway (your poor ears!!). I've had my headphones for over a year and a half now and they have stood the test of time pretty well in all, I haven't noticed any reduction in sound quality, or reliability.
The only complaint I have though is that after only about 6 months the rubber protection around each bud started to come off. Having little pieces of rubber tickling your inner ear is not exactly a comfortable sensation so in the end I had to pull all the rubber off! This is not a huge problem as the headphones are still reasonably comfortable to wear and it hasn't seemed to affect the sound in any way, it's just annoying and I don't see why it should happen.
On a final note, I would have to say that Apple have done a fantastic job of the branding of these speakers. Because almost all other headphones are black, and these are white, it is immediately apparent, even at a distance, if someone is listening to an iPod - because of the white wires. Personally this doesn't make a difference to me as I'm only after the music, but it is interesting to note I think.
All in all I am pretty satisfied with these headphones since they came essentially free with my iPod, but if I was going to replace them I probably wouldn't go out of my way to re-purchase this brand to go with my iPod.
Summary: Perfectly usable but not outstanding.

anonymili - 09/05/08 I would love to know how much these cost - if they wear out after a few months, how much would it cost me to get a new set? :) |
