Apple iPod Earphones
Advantages: Okay sound quality
Disadvantages: Wire too short, wire tangles way too easily, uncomfy, doesn't block outside noise, price
I have never bought a pair of these Apple iPod earphones but you receive them included along with an iPod purchase, so I have owned a few of them over the years. I recently bought a new little iPod shuffle for running and this included the standard pair of Apple earphones. I was glad to receive them as I do go though earphones fairly quickly as I find a pair doesn't last me too long before they start to break. I have recently just broken another pair of headphones which I had been using so I decided to put the Apple ones to use. Well, I had forgotten how annoying they are since the last time I used a pair of these!
On first glance they look like standard in ear headphones. They have a white cable and the ear pieces are a typical sort of size with L and R marked on them for ease of telling which ear is which. This is handy as they do fit better in the correct ears and I do check the labelling to make sure I have them on the right side. I am not too crazy about the white colour and would prefer black but this does not really other me and is just a question of preference.
The ear buds do not go deep into the ear so they do not really do an amazing job of blocking out the sounds around me. If I am walking along the street I find that I get a lot of traffic noise coming in and have to put the volume up a lot. However, they do leak some sound out, so this can be annoying to passers by. The ear buds do tend to stay in my ears okay and are not constantly falling out even though they are not lodged in that deeply.
Wearing these headphones is slightly annoying and uncomfortable for me as I feel that the wire is a bit on the short side. I like to have my iPod in my coat pocket and then I thread the wire of the headphones up under my scarf. This wire is just about long enough to do that but there is not really much extra length there. This wire has a very rubbery sort of coating on it which seems to make it tangle up extremely easily and whatever I do this wire seems to want to twist up around itself constantly. I always take care to unravel it before putting it on but somehow it twists even while I'm wearing it. I don't even know how it's possible! As the wire is already quite short, the twisting makes it even shorter and this makes the headphones a bit uncomfortable as the wire feels too taut. The twisting can also make me feel a bit strangled if it twists under the neck.
The sound quality is okay, fairly standard for a pair of in ear headphones. Nothing too special but not too bad or tinny.
They no longer seem to sell these separately on the Apple store online, only the ones with remote and mic. I have found these ones on Tesco direct for £19.97 but they are currently out of stock, so maybe they are phasing these out. £19.97 is a huge rip off for these and not worth it at all in my opinion. You can get generic in ear headphones or ones from the likes of Sony for half that or even less so I don't know why anyone would pay so much for the Apple ones.
I will use them until they break, but I definitely prefer my previous headphones which went further into the ear and so blocked out noise better, and had a longer and comfier wire.
Summary: Okay free with an iPod but no way would I pay £20 for these less than average quality earphones
