Apple iPod Earphones
Advantages: Great for my pop music as it sounds clear and good quality, easy to clean, easy to use
Disadvantages: Can get uncomfortable after long periods
I have owned several ipods over the last few years and a couple of iphones. With each of my purchases, I've received a pair of Apple earphones - today I'll review the ones I received with the three ipods. As they came with the ipods, they were included in their price. Having looked for a pair today to get a price, it seems they are hard to come by - there seems to be a few on ebay but they range vastly in price from £2 to £10. I also can't be sure if these are the genuine article or not either.
The earphones are very simple - they are not very technical and need little direction in order to use properly. It has been several years since I've purchased an ipod, but the three pairs I have from my ipod purchases haven't got anything in the way of controls on, all they come with is a small 3.5mm jack connection at one end and the earphones at the other, with a cable running between the two, at around 60cm long. The cable splits as with other headphones, as it gets towards the end where the earphones are housed. The wire is a good length although they are a bit of a pain to wrap up after use - I tend to wrap them around the ipod now because otherwise they end up in a tangled mess! They're bud earphones and so are placed into the ears rather than on the ears.
The buds are round in shape, although they are designed slightly out of the round shape towards one side to aid in the process of placing in and out of the ear and I assume to help the bud sit properly in the ear without falling out inadvertently. This isn't a huge accentuation though and isn't very noticeable when looking at them. Each bud is clearly marked by an L for left or an R for right to say which bud belongs in which ear. They are small buds that are around 1cm in diameter - they have no coverings at all and just sit in the outer part of the ear directly. Most of one side of each bud is the speaker and each bud is made of smooth plastic so is easy to clean after use. My last ipod was bought in 2009 and the earphones are still going strong with little signs of wear to them.
I've always found these earphones very comfortable to wear in short bursts of music, but not so much for longer periods such as on journeys or for long amounts of time on my sunbed on holiday. I find during longer periods my ears start to ache with the bud having been there for a while. I tend to use them for four or five songs and then take them out for a bit before playing some more to stop the uncomfortable feeling. I also find that the buds come out of my ears quite easily when I'm moving around so I do have to keep stopping what I'm doing to fix them back into place before playing the music again.
The music through these has always sounded great and of good quality. I'm not very experienced with the huge amounts of earphones available out there, but they're more than suitable for my needs - listening to pop and top 40 hits now and again when away from home. The music quality to me is more than acceptable and sounds clear, although the quality might not be as great with other types of music. As I said there are no extra controls included on these to lower or raise the volume for example (the ones I received with my two iphones had a volume control on as well as a microphone so it's dependent on the Apple product bought as to whether those little extras are included).
I've rated them four stars overall - I've taken one star off because they become uncomfortable after long periods but apart from that they've been great. For short uses, they're fantastic and I've got very little to complain about. I'm not sure if you're really into music whether these would be adequate for your use but for people like me who like listening to odd songs here and there to pass the time, I think they're perfect.
Thanks for reading :o)
