I have to use a lot of different gear for studio work, but often there is an overlap into the pleasure boundaries! These headphones are definitely headphones for pure aural pleasure. Small, sleek and stylish, Philips is a name I trust, having been weaned on their hi-fi products from a very young age. Their technology lasts and the quality is always good.
These headphones are designed for use with portable mp3 players, but I guess you could adapt them to work with larger hi fi units if you changed the jack inputs. Whereas standard Apple headphones might deliver a high quality sound, where these excel is in delivering an extra level of comfort. The ergonomically designed plugs actually shape to the ear canal which means comfort levels are much better than the nomal mini headphones. For me, I found this wonderful as the Apple ones have a tendency to slide out when you move around at speed. These lock into place and are also comfy after wearing for longer periods of time.
The design work is impressive, stylish and retro looking which appeals to me. They are also lightweight yet very sturdy with good solid casing around the earpieces. In terms of the sound quality, I must admit that I was impressed wholeheartedly. Apple's headphones deliver crisp sound, yet these seemed to push the boundaries a bit further, particularly when tested at volume. The hi end frequencies hold up well and the bass is deep with no distortion even on the most heavy drum and bass music!
The cable length is about right though I am quite clumsy and it can get caught when you bend over! You can also zip them up in the little carrying case, a neat add on with this package. They generally retail for around twenty pounds, making them dearer than Apple, but you are paying for a classy look, strong dynamic sound and built to last technology, so for me they ticked many boxes.
The Philips SHE9620s provide a clear crisp sound quality, i listen to a lot of heavy rock and have found it really helps produce a deeper further sound. It breaks the songs apart, you can clearly hear bass which with most earphones seems to just drone it out with a low buzzing noise. My ipod has many different sound options, and unlike other earphones each option sounds different, with spoken word their voice becomes clear and easy, with rock heavy drums kick in and louder guitar. I love the way the song can sound so different every time with each option. If you listen to a lot of electronic which i dont, you will find these tend to distort the noise, and produce a lower droning beat. Overall they are great earphones that create a deep listening experience, and superb comfort with soft ear buds. They also look and feel great.
