Advantages: Sound quality, stylish, isolating, punchy bass
Disadvantages: Reactive to vibrations, pricey, cable could be a bit longer
I bought the CX 300 headphones four months ago to use to listen to MP3s on my mobile phone.
Whilst looking for in-ears I also considered the Sony EX-71s, the Creative EP-630 and some of the high-end Shure range. Unlike the Shures, the Sennheiser's are only semi-isolating (they don't go fully into your ear) so you're still able to hear surrounding noises - although not to the level of distraction - which I personally find quite reassuring.
The sound quality of the Sennheisers is very good - as long as you get a proper fit. To achieve this the headphones are provided with rubber covers in three different sizes. When they are properly in the ear they give punchy, deep but not overpowering bass (you can almost physically feel it) and a clear, detailed sound - with good stereo imaging. They are a nice sounding headphone for the price.
The Sennheisers are very similar to the cheaper Creative EP-630. They are made using the same casing, but with a different driver in the headphone itself. The reviews I read were mixed over which had the better sound quality but the Sennheiser seemed to tip the scale.
The build quality in both headphones is very good, with the CX 300 having a rubbery-type cable (which doesn't seem to tangle much) and a Y-shaped design at the end so you can put one of the cables behind your neck. The cable length is rather short - long enough to reach from your jeans pocket to your ears but not much further.
The CX 300s are quite light weighing only 4g. They also look quite stylish with metal detailing on the phones and comes in three colours - silver, black and white. They don't come with a carry case although I've never used the ones I've received with headphones before.
One major disadvantage of the CX 300s (and many other isolating headphones) is that they pick up vibrations when you are moving (similar to a doctor's stethoscope) which can be quite distracting from the music. These headphones seem more suited for journeys where you sit down a lot rather than walk, although I still use them for both.
Overall the Sennheiser CX 300s are a good quality isolating earphone. They provide good sound quality and excellent bass. Their only flaws are the vibration problem and the fact that they're quite expensive in comparison to their competitors (especially the Creatives). Recently they seem to have gone down in price however, and because of this I highly recommended them.
Summary: Stylish earphones with good sound quality and solidly built but problems with vibrations

grahamt - 27/09/06 I've just bought a pair on Amazon for £18 including delivery so I hope they live up to expectations. I just can't use the ordinary earbuds. They just drop out all of the time. |
