Sennheiser CX 300-B
Advantages: Amazing sound quality, great design, hard-wearing
Disadvantages: No hands-free included
I bought my Sennheiser CX 300 B earphones as a replacement for my iPhone and iPod earphones last year. I feel that the standard issue Apple 'phones are severely lacking when it comes to sound quality, with a very tinny and shallow feel, and are now little more than a fashion accessory. Personally, when I listen to my music I wanted a richer sound, where I can appreciate the artists' work more...
I have to say that the sound quality from this compact Sennheiser product really blew me away in comparison. They are advertised as having a 'bass-driven' sound, which is an area where I feel the Apple products were lacking, and their claims prove to be true. Not only are the deeper bass notes of my music more powerful and clear, but I can hear background melodies and small intricacies which I had never picked up before except when listening on a stereo.
The only downside I really can find is that I cant use these earphones for hands-free phone calls, as there is no built in microphone and remote, but I knew this when I bought them, so this is only a minor inconvenience.
One previous issue I have had with earphones is their durability. I constantly roll up the cables and try to store them neatly in my bag or pocket, but they always get tangled, and with some sets this can cause damage to the cables. Although the cables for these Sennheiser 'phones are very thin and flimsy feeling, they have not succumbed to this kind of damage so far. This may be because they are high quality and hard-wearing, but I think it has also helped that I use a small cable tie to roll them up neatly when I'm not using them.
The Sennheiser CX 300 B come with 3 different sizes of rubber fitting so that the buds can fit snugly in most people's ears. When you first open the pack, you will have to experiment with the various different fittings to see which is best. I found that although the smallest ones felt most comfortable at first, they fell out quite often, so I quickly switched to the medium ones which I have used for around 9 months now. It may take a few sessions to work out which ones are bets for you.
I found that the ergonomic design of the rubber fittings gives you 3 benefits (provided you choose the right size for your ear):
* Comfort - The soft rubber fits nicely and doesn't cause your ear to ache or become sore. The buds stay put in your ears and is unlikely to fall out even when jogging for example.
* Noise Cancelling - A good fit means background noise is reduced allowing you to hear more of your music.
* Sound Quality - The small buds can produce a powerful, rich, bass-driven sound, but to get the most out of this, you have to find the right fit.
Without going into too much explicit detail, these are 'in-ear' earphones which do fit snugly right into your ear, so for obvious reasons it's best to clean them regularly.
Yesterday a colleague at work asked if he could borrow mine to listen to a training video on his PC, and I stalled saying awkwardly "Well, they're in-ear ones, so they've been in my ears all morning, so that won't be nice for you - maybe someone else has some you could borrow". What I should have said was: "I don't want to put them in my ears after they've been in yours - I don't know where you've been, you could be filthy!" I wouldn't recommend sharing, unless you're happy to fumigate them every time you get them back!
Overall, these earphones were a great purchase - I got them online from Amazon for around £20 last year, and have been thoroughly pleased with their performance so far.
Summary: Help me to appreciate my music properly!
