Sennheiser HD 201
Advantages: Comfortable, great sound quality, great value
When my girlfriend asked me what I would like for Christmas, for once I actually had an idea, something which I had been thinking about for some time but hadn't done anything about, I wanted a pair of headphones to allow me to listen to music or play computer games without disturbing my girlfriend if she wanted some peace and quiet, or wanted to concentrate on other things.
Having put some thought into this, I had a good idea about what I wanted and what the headphones must give me...
* I wanted some nice over the ear headphones as I find in-ear ones both annoying, as they keep falling out, and uncomfortable when they are in.
* I wanted closed back headphones, to keep external sound out and my music etc in so neither my girlfriend or I would be disturbed when I was using the headphones.
* I wanted them them to be nice and comfortable, light and cool when wearing them, from experience I know that wearing heavy, hot and uncomfortable headphones is really not pleasant (would you believe...) and makes you really not want to use them.
* Also I wanted the sound quality to be good with a nice balanced sound, not too much bass and not too much treble.
With a bit of research, I found some which I thought might be suitable, the Sennheiser HD201s. I duly let my girlfriend know and crossed my fingers that Santa would get them for me.
It was with much delight that, on Christmas morning, I unwrapped a parcel to discover it was the headphones I was hoping for. At the bargain price of a mere £16 or there abouts, these headphones hadn't set Santa back too much.
The box was simply cardboard box, with none of the annoying sealed plastic packaging that so many items come in these days, just a simple box with the headphones in a plastic bag to keep them clean etc. As well as the unnecessary waste involved with the plastic packaing on so many items, I also find they can be a nuisance to get into, often requiring decent scissors or a sharp knife etc, and more often than not a few scrapes on the knuckles as you wrestle to remove your item from the packing.
It was nice and simple and refreshing to merely be opening a box!
In the box along with the headphones, was an adapter jack so the headphones can be used with a 1/4 inch headphone jack socket as well as 3.5mm jack sockets (only one at a time obviously).
The headphones are really nicely made and feel well put together depsite their wonderful lightweight nature, the box tells me they weigh a mere 165g. The headphones are made up for three main parts, the two ear cups and the band that goes over the head.
The head band, for want of a less girly word, is about 4cm across and made of nice sturdy feeling plastic. The part that actually contacts your head is nicely padded with a lovely pad that is of just the right texture neither too hard nor too soft. The material the pad is made of is nice and smooth and feels cool to the touch. In use the pad stays nice and cool and as such doesn't make your head hot and uncomfortable.
The two ear pieces (or cups) attach to the head band via a nice sliding mechanism which gives a good amount of adjustability.
The connection between the slider allows a small amount of swivelling adjustment. In addition to this the cups also tilt as you put them on. The range of adjustability is great and means that the cups sit really nicely whatever your head size.
Around the edge of the cup is a ring of padding, which like the head band pad, is just right and again made from the same material which is lovely and comfortable. The cups are just the right size to sit comfortably over your ears so there is no pressure on your ears which is a major cause of discomfort.
The cable attached to the headphones is 3 metres long and fairly thin and unlike a lot of cables it is not prone to tangling which is a god send as I have lost count of the time I've spent untangling cables over the years!
Having now been using my headphones for a god few months, I can safely say that they really do sound great, they have a good clarity of sound and are well balanced. The bass is in my opinion ust about spot on, giving a nice rich depth to the sound without swamping the finer details of the music. The mid range sound is great, with voices and guitars etc etc all sounding nicely detailed and warm and the top end is lovely and tight and crisp though still with a nice warm sound.
I have spent a lot of time listening to music through my Marantz amp which I have to say outputs amazing 2 channel audio and these headphones have reproduced it in a really pleasing manner which leaves me with a smile on my face and really enjoying my music. I have also used them hooked up to my mp3 player and again the sound is very impressive and rich, never venturing into the harsh clinical sound I have had from so many pairs of headphones in the past!
They really are a pleasure to listen with.
In the past I have had headphones that have been unbearable to wear for more than a few minutes before my ears got too hot and the weight of them made my neck and my head ache. These could not be more different! The ear cups fit nicely over the ear without squashing/squeezing/crushing any part of the ear. The cushioning round the edges is lovely and soft and even after extended useage does not get too hot or itchy.
The headphones are lovely and lightweight too so they dont put too much pressure on your head as you wear them and they really don't make your head or neck ache.
Another problem I have had in the past is headphones which have been too tight with the strap over the head squeezing my head and to the point that it gives me a horrid headache. Again there are no such problems with these, there is just the right amount of springiness in the over head band to hold the headphones in place without squeezing.
These really are the most comfortable headphones I have worn and even after several hours are still really nice to wear.
I would heartily recommend these headphones to anyone who wanted a good pair of headphones and didn't want to spend too much.
They are comfortable to wear even for extended periods and the sound quality is great. They are nice and easy for any amplifier etc to drive meaning they are suitable for use with pretty much any audio source from a small mp3 player upto a nice hifi amplifier which makes them a great choice.
If I was forced to say something negative I would find it very hard and would have to make a mention of the cable length...
At 3 metres long it is great for listening at home whilst sat near your hifi but if you intend to use the headphones to listen to an mp3 player or on the move which would be great due to the lightweight nature and great sound, the cable is a bit long and leaves you with loads to get tangled up, or to try to lose in a pocket. This really is not a massive problem though and to be fair I think it is one of those things were the manufacturer is stuck between a rock and a hard place really, as no matter if they go short or long there will be people who would want the opposite! It really is not something to worry about, instead concentrate on enjoying the sound of these great headphones and revel in the fact that they don't cost much but perform brilliantly!!!
Summary: Brilliant headphones at a great price!!!
