Sennheiser HD 201
Advantages: Cheap, Good frequncy responce, flat (ish) EQ, look great, comfotable
Disadvantages: Cable too long, non-collapsable, no case
As a sound engineer I get given a lot of pairs of headphones by shops and companies so I like to think I have quite a varied and in depth take on quality, I must admit i'm very particular when it comes to audio equipment.
These Sennheiser HD201 over ear headphones by retail at around £15-£20 which puts them around most upper-budget pairs price wise, so out of the box I expected slightly lacking frequency response across the field and an average build quality. They also adjustable on the arms for all head sizes and only come in black.
LET'S start with the design and features. These are a wired pair of over ear headphones that have a 3m cable with a gold plated 3.5mm jack connector (the standard for mp3 players), but they do come with a 1/4 inch (big) adaptor. They don't come with a carry case and they are not foldable. Now audio quality, they are better than what I would expect from the price range, the sound quality is very good. They have a good range, meaning they have good response to high, mid as well as bass frequencies, which is again quite rare for this range of headphones. I have tried them with a variety of music and have found that it is all very good. The clarity is okay, about what I would expect for the price, on an mp3 player they are ideal. If your into any sort of mixing or music creation and want a pair of flat response headphone on a budget I would recommend these, the sort of frequency response is comparable to pairs I have that are over £50.
RELIABILITY & BUILD
I have had these headphones for around 1 year and have used them a lot for extended periods. I have had no problems with comfortability, I can have them on for hours before needing a break. They are built well and feel fairly sturdy although they do feel a little flimsy if i'm being particularly picky. They fit well due to moving ear pieces.
They are better than I would expect for the price. They have a great frequency range and have a surprisingly flat frequency response for a budget pair of headphones. They are built to last and would be ideal for everyday use. I would recommend these to those that want a great pair of mp3 player headphones or a budget pair of studio headphones. The only downside for me is that the wire is too long, at 3m I often find it getting tangled but this problem can be alleviated with some tape.
Summary: Brillaint for mp3 or budget studio
