Sony MDR-E 818 LP Headphones
*Why buy?*
I was happy with the supplied earphones that came with my Sony MP3 player. I saw these whilst browsing and noted that a significant amount of reviewers commented on the impressive bass. I really do like a good bass sound when listening to rock music in particular. As the price and design were most certainly right I decided to give these a whirl.
*Short word on the package*
Small. There you go. I like minimalist packaging and this is what you get. Transparent quality plastic package that holds all that you need to know to ensure you have the right product. Easy to open. Clear instructions that are concise - another bonus. That is it - what more do you need.
*Any extras?*
You want earphones that is exactly what you get here. No additional stuff but it isn't really needed. One pair of earphones and some foam covers that are optional.

Lets see what the fuss is about then. First impressions are that these guys look very similar to the earphones that came with the kit. This was reassuring as they are very comfortable. These are the design that sit just inside the ear and do not enter the ear canal - I cannot tolerate the ear bud style and wish that I could as they offer great sound options. Looking like my original set of earphones is as far as these go - they sit snug and comfortably. The jack is different because it is an L shape connection - this fits perfectly into my player and there is no flimsy feel to the area that connects to the wire. The jack is a standard size and would fit most players. The wire is a good length without being too long - I can easily tuck the player into the top of my pants behind me. The cable is a standard design with equal lengths to both earphones - this was a relief as I don't put the wire behind my neck.
Quality seems to be a very good standard. The whole structure feels secure and I have not noticed any loose areas up to now. The earphones feel light and are ergonomically well styled. I have petite ears and they fit really well. I have not had them fall out. They are comfortable and have not irritated my ears.
Now we come to the sound delivery. The sound was not a great deal different from my original Sony earphones - which are impressive for a standard set - until the bass sections and rock music build ups where experienced. These earphones are very impressive for the price and level that they are at. The whole range of tones and vocals is well balanced and rich with the icing on the cake being the delivery of the bass tones. The bass is excellent. There is a real quality of depth and the sounds are fluent, smooth and intense. It is very noticeable but does not hurt my ears - I have noticed that I now have my player turned down quite a bit as the range of sound is so much bolder. I could not believe that the sound would be so different as my other earphones delivered so well. These earphones provide me with clear, rich, quality sound for a fantastic price. I have no doubt that there are far superior earphones on the market but these are just perfect for me as the design, quality and price are excellent for my listening needs.
These earphones are not sound isolating but they have a 'silent cap' design that prevents sound leakage and they are not really noticeable. Traffic and other noise can be heard when using the earphones but it is not overly intrusive if the sound is turned up a small amount.
After using these earphones for some time now I can conclude that they are a quality product that is well worth the price and will provide great sound experience. I have no problem recommending these for everyday listening.

*A short final word*
I am really glad that I purchased these. I wasn't going to as my original earphones were fine. The difference is in the bass delivery - just takes it up a notch and it makes rock music all the more enjoyable in particular, though other genres benefit greatly too. Rich, clear sound is experienced and no unwanted crackles or tinny sounds are audible. Too good to be true in my opinion at this price especially if you need another option to the ear bud style. Five Stars for Sony.
