Microsoft Xbox 360 Headset
Advantages: Online Comms, Mute Option, Comfy
Disadvantages: Audio Quality, Volume, Material
The Xbox 360's official Microsoft Headset brings the power of voice to online gaming, along with a wide array of trash talk. First made for the original Xbox, the 2nd generation headset changing almost nothing. You get a flimsy plastic headband with equally flimsy plastic mic casing. The mic and earphone themselves aren't too impressive. Regardless of where your friends or adversaries are based in the world, audio clarity remains inconsistant. Considering Microsoft charge for the privilege of xbox live, you'd think it would offer more than the Playstation 3's equivalent. The sound is still worse than a telephone line, as its difficult to always understand the simplest of conversations. There is also about a one second time lapse so you often cut each other off and accidentally talk over each other. Volume can also be a problem because it struggles with both the high and low of the volume spectrum. Loud noises or shouts get distorted and become muffled (especially if the mic is touched), while whispers go unnoticed, merely lowering your voice often doesn't compute with the mic.
The headset features two options, one a volume dial which doesn't really need to be adjusted as full volume is almost always required, and two is the lock switch which basically turns your input mic off, allowing you to still hear others while you yourself are muted (this is rather handy if you are playing music or playing in a loud environment). It is connected via standard headphone jack into the bottom of the controller and offers about a good metre of cable between the headband and jack. The band itself is adjustable for larger sized heads, the mic can be positioned closely to the mouth and the hearing receiver is soft and easy to wear. The opposite earpiece rests lightly on your ear so the whole thing is rather lightweight. The disadvantages of being so light means that the headset can easily break. Unofficial headsets however sometimes have a flexible mic encased in a strong rubber wire and also offer the same average audio clarity at a cheaper price.
Summary: A working mic, easily broken
