Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Headset
Advantages: Wire free! Well-built, Easy to use, Works brilliantlty
Not long ago, my headset for my Xbox 360 broke. It is quite hard to buy a new one, in fact I am pretty sure that Microsoft will replace them if they break, if under warranty. After a number of times going to different shops looking for a new headset, I had no luck. However, There was one thing that kept popping up in every shop. This was the Official Microsoft Wireless Headset. It was pretty expensive considering what it was, but it has turned out to be a great purchase! It is really well built, unlike the standard headset, very easy to use and wire free! Therefore, I think it was well worth the price I paid. This headset is made for use with Xbox Live for the Xbox 360.
It looks really sleek and cool. When I first saw it in the shop, I wondered how on earth it would fit on your head, and then how others would be able to hear you. It is really small at around 10cm long and under 3cm long, excluding the ear fitting. It is coloured the same as the Xbox 360 itself. It mainly is a very light shade of grey, with the ear fitting being a darker grey, and the bridge connecting the controls and microphone in the darker grey colour too. The colours make it look really modern and with it. There is a bigger rectangular section to it, where the ear piece comes out of. This rectangular control panel allows you to turn the volume up and down with two separate buttons, and has the on/off button in shiny silver! It took me a while to get used to adjusting the volume when it was on my ear, but now I know which the volume up button is and which the volume down button is, just by feeling. On the rectangular, narrower part where the microphone lies on the end, is the XBOX 360 logo.
Flipping it over, it looks a lot more complicated from the inside, but really is quite simple indeed. I figured out how to work it without any instructions - it really is easy. On the larger rectangular part on the underside is the ear piece, including the part that you hear through. This is covered with a circular muff to comfort your ear and for protection. The muff isn't really thick, but just good enough to do the job, so it doesn't shove into your ear and feel uncomfortable. On the narrow part are four light panels, below a button. This button is used to connect to the Xbox, and the four lights indicate which player you are, and can mean other things too, more on that later. At the tip of this part is the microphone, which is just one small hole, but very sensitive and picks up your voice easily. At the other end of the headset is a round hole for the charger to fit into. It is all symmetrical and looks great!
Ease of use
The headset is really easy to use, as I said; I didn't need any instructions or anything to get it going. First off, give it a good charge for a couple of hours to get some life into it. To switch it on, you simply hold the on/off button for a couple of seconds. The first time you use it, you will need to press that 'search' button on the underside, to wirelessly connect to your Xbox 360. This is just the same as what you have to do with a wireless controller. You must press the search button on the front (where the disc tray is you're your Xbox 360 too. Once you start searching, the four lights will simultaneously light up in a line. Once it has connected, the four lights will all flash at the same time to tell you that it has found the Xbox 360. Then, the lights will switch to an according number depending on what player you are. By simply clicking the search button once, you can change what player you want the microphone assigned to. The lights are numbered on the plastic coating, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Therefore, if you are the one player by yourself, then switch it to 1 and it should work fine.
To adjust the volume simply press the + button to increase it, and the - button to decrease the volume level. As you do this, there will be a sound in your ear piece to confirm that you have adjusted the volume. A 'beep' will sound to notify you this. There are also according sounds as to the status of your microphone. If it is low on battery, it will beep every now and then. When you switch it on, it does a few beeps in raising pitch, and when you switch it off, it does the same from high to low pitch.
This product is excellent, quality-wise. It is made really well, and having had it for months now, it is still working in mint condition. I have had no problems with it whatsoever, apart from when I forget to charge it and it switches off half way through a game! It picks up your voice clearly, very well. There is no need to cup your hand or anything stupid as you speak. Simply attach the earpiece to your ear and speak at a normal tone. To enhance comfort, the headset comes with two different sized earpieces, so you can have a snug fit. You can even walk right across the living room or even into the kitchen to make a quick sandwich with the headset able to work within 30 feet of the console itself. A fully charged headset will last a whopping 8 hours! I think this is fantastic, as you don't sit there gaming for more than 8 hours straight anyway, and it doesn't need to be charged every day whatsoever. You can enjoy utter comfort with no wires!
It isn't such a cheap item, but the price is well worth what you get. It is available on Amazon.co.uk for £30.98. You can buy it in most good electronic stores for a similar price. It is quite expensive if you think of it as just a headset, but if you buy this you will have no regrets. It enables you to experience and enjoy superior audio quality over Xbox Live, with the added bonus of comfort and a cool look.
10/10 - This headset is a must buy for the Xbox 360, especially if your headset has broken. Don't you just hate it when your headset wire gets caught on your leg or something, consequently getting yanked off your head, almost breaking it? With no wires, this is the ultimate gadget for the Xbox 360, preventing any frustration of wires. It is really easy to work, looks impressive and the quality is formidable. This is the ultimate kit if you have the Microsoft Official Wireless Controller, as you are then fully kitted out - wire free!
