I bought these recently to replace my Sony earbuds after they died, and am I glad I did. If you read my other review, you will see I do like a lot of bass, so these sounded perfect for me, in both senses of the word.
First impressions are that the build quality is excellent. It retains the flat anti-tangle cable of other Sony headphones, and the metal and plastic construction feels solid. The massive padded ear cups and headband make wearing them a comfortable experience, and they are not too heavy. After a long time wearing them however they can make your ears a little warm, which does feel a bit weird.
The sound quality on these is very very good. I don't find that the bass over powers the rest of the music too much, and they give a welcome boost to music that you would never expect such powerful bass from (I proved this by testing some Cliff Richard - don't ask). They do really excel when given music with a lot of bass however, and it can at times feel like you are having a head massage. I use these with my Sansa Clip+ and it has no problem driving them at all. The volume can be turned up to the maximum without any distortion occurring, but they're so loud I can't think of any situation where you would need to go that far.
The main disadvantage of these headphones is that, at any volume, they leak sound massively. Everyone around you can hear your music fairly clearly. Otherwise, I can't really fault them. And at their price? Absolute bargain.
I have been using these headphones for over a month and I am going to give a go at reviewing them as as they have not been review already.
These headphones are very big and that is good and bad depending how you look at it but i will mention the bad first. These headphones are large and I have only used them for home listening rather than taking them out the house as i would have to store them in a bag due to the size. However the large design enables a lot of features. The ear cups for these headphones are very padded and this makes them a joy to wear as it doesn't feel like you are even wearing headphones. I could easily wear these for hours and have without feeling any discomfort. The design is very durable and they are made of mostly plastic and some metal. But don't be put of by this as I have found these headphones to be very sturdy and they have not broken on me so far. The headband is padded which makes for even more comfort and the cables are long and thick so don't worry about them breaking. It also comes with a nice carrying bag to put the headphones in for travel.
If headphones do not sound good it doesn't matter how they feel or look but this is no problem with the XB500s. They deliver good sound quality with no compromise in design. The massive 50mm drivers power out some very reliable sound and it can suit most genres. However i would more recommend this to those of you who like songs with a heavy baseline as the large amounts of base is one of the main features. There is a fair amount of sound leakage so this may not suit you if you are going to use these headphones in an office or in public. However the padded ear cups isolate any background noise so the music is clear and uninterrupted.
Value for money
In terms of value for money these are a must buy. They are priced at a medium to low end pair of headphones but put in a much better performance than the price would suggest so picking up these headphones is a must. These could last you a very long time if treated correctly because of a durable design and that alone would make them worth the money.
