Advantages: to be pain free

Disadvantages: lots of serious side affects

I recently went to the doctor because I keep getting strong unexplainable pains below my right breast and the pain felt behind my right bottom ribs. The pain happened mainly at night once a month or so for about 8 months.

I put it out of my mind until it started coming every other night and then happened twice in the day, I went to the doctor after scaring myself by searching on the net for a dignosis.

After being examined the doctor said I was proberly an inflammed muscle or something. She perscribed me Naproxen for 1 month and said it will break the cycle.

I had no idea what she was going on about and thought I had a gall bladder problem, however I come home a thought I would give the pills a go.

After my first tablet I have not had any pains come and am nearing the end of my course.
I am slightly worried that as soon as I stop taking them them the pain will come back.

The anti-inflamatory I am on works by reducing the hormone that causes inflammation and pain. It works incredable well. My dosage is 500mg twice daily after food.

I have only been given a months supply as the side affects are serious
as the include risk of heart attacks and strokes and this risk is increase the longer you take this drug.

Other side affects can be bleeding of the gut and perforation.
Here is a list of the side affects:

chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech.
black, bloody, or tarry stools;
coughing up blood.
rapid weight gain;
urinating less than usual.
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, jaundice.
fever, sore throat, and headache , red skin rash;
muscle weakness;
purple spots on the skin, and/or seizure (convulsions).

Less serious Naprosyn side effects may include:

upset stomach, mild heartburn or stomach pain, diarrhea,
bloating, gas, constapation
dizziness, headache, nervousness;
skin itching or rash
blurred vision; or
ringing in your ears.

I was also told not to take any over counter medicine while on these.
You can not take this drug if you suffer from

* a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot
* heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure
* a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding;
* liver or kidney disease
* asthma
* polyps in your nose;
* a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
or if you smoke.

It is advisable never to take medicines that are perscribe for anyone other than yourself.

Anti-inflamatories are excellent for killing pain.

Other more common anti-inflamatories are aspirin and ibuprofen.
Naproxen is available on perscription and also over the counter under brand name Aleve.

As with all medicines keep away from children.

Summary: for me the side affects were worth risking...

Hi. I'd be inclined to request Naproxen as its own category, rather than sticking this under the anti-inflammatory drugs in general category (as I'd think that's a discussion about the class of drug, rather than a specific drug).

I can ask for it to be moved, but you may like to suggest the category (if it's not already there).

Aleve is not available in the UK , naprexen can only be bought at the chemist as Feminax Ultra and only for period pain for anything else you need the stronger dose that you had on prescription x
