It will soon be the time to find the midge repellent, especially if you are going to Scotland (no offence to any Scottish people meant) or if you are going fishing, camping or walking near rivers and reservoirs. It is always good if you are simple having a barbeque or sunbathing in the garden

We always reckoned our best midge repellent was our daughter they bit her not us.J
Apart from our daughter we have used several different makes of midge repellent and Autan is one we have bought and used several times.

Autan make a range of midge repellents.
Autan Active comes in different forms.

There is an aerosol spray this is easy to use you can spray over your entire body to give complete protection and it lasts quite a long time up to 8 hours. This has a light smell.
In the past I have been bitten through light clothing and this spray can be sprayed over clothing to stop the little midges biting through it. The active ingredient is Icaridin.

You can also buy Autan in a lotion. This is a thin lotion you can spread over large areas of exposed skin, fairly simple to use dries rapidly. Smells ok and the active ingredient Icridin. This one I have used I find it messier to use than the spray but it is effective.

Then there is the pump spray. I have not used this one but apparently it is easy and fast to apply and you do not get it all over your hands. It is transparent fluid that dries quickly, smells the same as the others and contains Icaridin


Autan also comes in an active insect repellent stick. This you apply direct to any skin you wish to protect. This is the insect repellent that I have used most frequently as it comes in a handy stick in a solid form like an antiperspirant stick. It is easy to apply to exposed skin. The reason why I have chosen this one is because it is effective and the stick is convenient it is easy to carry in the car glove compartment, in your handbag or in your rucksack when walking those hills. I carry this one as there is no risk of the liquid leaking and it is a fairly small convenient size

Autan active is easily identified by its packaging, bright yellow with a red cap the word Autan in white active in black and a black zig zag line with a fly. As well as mosquitoes it provides protection against horse flies and ticks. The repellent lasting 4 hrs for ticks and 8 hours for mosquitoes.
Autan developed a new Family variety that has no preservatives or artificial colours and contains aloe Vera to keep your skin soft.

There is the Family cream that is suitable to use as a face cream and for children This one contains aloe Vera that leaves your skin softer it has a delicate fragrance

Then there is the Family milk Autan claim this is not sicky it is a light liquid easy to apply.This is available for £10.60 for 100mls from www.weston

There is also a Family spray this is easier to apply. Autan make a family stick too.

There is a product I wish had been available or that I knew about years ago A mosquito and an anti tick pump spray .When we have been to Scotland and to the French Pyrenees we have had several ticks attach themselves to us. A tick is a small arachnid closely related to the mite it is a parasite of sheep and cattle, dogs too. It will attach itself to you by burrowing its head into your skin and suck your blood as it sucks and consumes your blood it gets a fat body yeuch . They are difficult to remove and can carry Lymes Disease nasty you don’t want that.Autan tick spray protects you from ticks for four hours and mossies for 8 hours. I shall get some for when we go to the Pyrenees this year. I have bought this from Boots before and other chemists .

Autan also make bite ease to ease the pain if you should get bitten this comes in a small tube easy to carry in your bag.

Read and follow safety instructions on the packaging of this insect repellent Do not get in your eyes it will irritate mucus membranes do not put on sunburnt skin . Autan is NOT suitable for children under the age of two baby may rub his eyes and suck his fingers with this so not a safe good idea.
Autan first appeared on the market in the early 80s it was first made and marketed in Germany.
This repelant is effective I have used it often and it works for me.
