Advantages: Soothing, effective

Disadvantages: Expensive

Benylin Chesty Cough syrup won't make you drowsy and it is excellent for soothing those awful hacking coughs that seems to come in bouts and leave your eyes watering and your chest sore.

This medicine is available without prescription from pharmacies and costs around £2.49 for a 150ml bottle, so it isn't cheap.

The manufacturer, Pfizer, recommends it for the treatment of chesty, or productive coughs. It loosens phlegm and helps you to clear your airways. I find it particularly useful at bed time if I have a cough because it works right away.

Adults and children over 12 can take two 5ml spoons of this cough medicine up to four times per day. Children between 6 and 12 years old can take one 5 ml spoonful up to four times per day. It is not recommended for children under 6 years old.

This is not suitable if you are breast feeding, or pregnant, unless you take medical advice first. It is always wise to consult a doctor if your symptoms last for more that a few days or you have other worrying, or unusual symptoms.

The syrup is red in colour, and tastes sweet but it does have a bitter after taste. I find it quite sickly so you probably won't want to take it if you have an unsettled stomach.

The main ingredients of this cough medicine are gaifenesin and levementhol. It also contains glucose, sucrose and sodium which may be important in particular to diabetics.

Benylin is a well known and trusted brand name and it is the first cough medicine that I would reach for. I tend to suffer from mild bronchitis several times a year during winter and usually try this first. Obviously, if the sysmptoms persist I see a doctor.

Although this is quite expensive it can work out even more expensive if you have to try two, or three bottles of cough medicine before you find one that works.

I would say that if this doesn't do the trick, then you need to see a doctor.

Summary: Soothing, fast, effective.
