Advantages: soothing immediate effect

Disadvantages: short lived

This is a cough medicine which is made for chesty coughs. It is made by the well known company Benylin. They make all sorts of cough medicine for all different types of coughs. The chesty cough one that I bought was the non drowsy version.

It is packaged in a cardboard box and is red in colour. The bottle itself is made from brown glass. It contains Guaifenesin and Levomenthol.

There are clear usage instructions on the box and in the leaflet inside. Adults and children over 12 can take two 5ml spoons of this cough medicine up to four times per day. Children between 6 and 12 years old can take one 5 ml spoonful up to four times per day. It is not recommended for children under 6 years old.

The box says Benylin chesty coughs works deep down to loosen phlegm, clear bronchial congestion and make your cough more productive.

The liquid itself is red in colour and has a sort of cherry smell. It is quite runny so you have to be careful dispensing onto the spoon.

I found the mixture did soothe my throat and gave me relief from my cough for a short while. The mixture had a rather sweet taste to it but did not taste terrible like some mixtures can. I like the fact that it is non drowsy as you can take it any time of the day and not just at bedtime. It gives you immediate relief from the constant coughing. The effect however for me was temporary but it was nice and soothing so made the cough a bit more bearable.

The bottle I bought contained 300ml and cost £4.29
You can get it from supermarkets and chemists.

Summary: great for immediate relief

Benylin - something you can never quite forget!

I prefer old traditional methods like Kilkof by Parkinsons but it can be difficult to get and has a warm licorice effect. Still, Benilyn is a trusted formula - after they changed it in the mid 1970's when the formula was found to have a slight drug like effect on buyers.
