Advantages: helped a little bit

Disadvantages: I felt sick of it

As I started to work a couple of weeks ago I can spend only a couple of hours with my kids and I try to make it a quality time together. They are in nursery and they are sick quite often so I luckily catch from them everything. I started with a cold and right after I started to feel better I caught flu. The nasty chesty cough lasts for 4-5 weeks now and it is really irritating. If it won't kill me I will have fabulous abs...

I tried almost everything available in the supermarkets. As you can see, without any result... The first one I picked from the shelf was Benylin Chesty Coughs Non-Drowsy. It came in a cardboard box which illustrated well the lungs and located the pain. I think I have chosen the right product as I feel some pain in my chest exactly where the picture on the box shows. It cost 3.49 pounds for 150 ml syrup.

This syrup comes in a glass bottle and has children safe cap. It aims to sooth the chesty coughs, loosen phlegm and clear bronchial congestion. It contains Guaifenesin and Levomenthol.

Dosage:
Adults and children aged 12 years and over: two 5 ml spoonfuls four times a day. Not recommended for children under 12 years old. Do not use more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

Ingredients:
Each 5 ml of Cough Syrup contains: Guaifenesin 100 mg, Levomenthol 1.1 mg, Also contains: Liquid Glucose, Sucrose, Ethanol, E124 (See leaflet), This product contains 5 vol % Ethanol, Sodium Content: 16.42 mg/5 ml.

Taste:
It has sweet fruity taste with menthol. You feel the sweet taste first than it is similar to kids flu medicines but the menthol destroys all the enjoyable experience.

Effects:
Maybe it is just me but after I managed to take two spoonfuls of syrup as it was recommended I felt so sick that the morning sickness during my pregnancies was nothing compared to this. I tried to solve the situation and went to sleep but usually this doesn't work. I gave it a go next day again but I took only one spoonful. I felt sick again but it was bearable. I think I was sick because of the menthol content of the product, so I can imagine that not all of you suffer from this side effect.
Apart from feeling sick I felt slightly better next day but as I didn't take the recommended dosage it didn't help.

Do I recommend it?
I think if you don't have any problems with menthol in general you should give this product a go. Despite using it only twice I felt a little difference so I guess it would work.
