Advantages: Not a bad taste, feels soothing, helped me sleep
Disadvantages: Sticky and drips down the side of the bottle when I used it with a spoon
I have had a cough that has lasted for ages. I was put on anti biotics for a week, yet after that time I still had a cough and was still struggling to get much sleep as no matter how propped up I was going to sleep I would awake slumped down and the result was a massive coughing fit!
I called NHS direct for advise. Without going into too much yukky details as the color of things had changed they said the bacterial infection had gone but I was still left with a lot of stuff that I needed to get a linctus to help get rid of. They advised I popped to a local pharmacy to speak to the pharmacist and get what they recommended.
So I came home with Benylin Chesty Coughs Original at £4.29 for a 150ml glass bottle in a red/purple box. On the box it states it contains Diphenhydramine and Levomenthol and it has a soothing effect and deep penetrating relief.
Adults and children over 12 can take 2 5ml spoonfuls four times a day and children 6-12 can take 1 5ml spoonful four times a day. It says not to exceed stated dose and warns it can cause drowsiness and not to drive or operate machinery if affected. Also says to avoid alcohol.
My experience.
I avoid cough linctus/medicines due to the taste. I only ever have them when the cough is too bad to ignore. This is the first time I have tried Benylin and I was quite surprised by the taste. It is difficult to describe, but it is not bad then again it is not nice. You can tell it is medicine but it does not make me shudder when I have it!
I took it for about 5 evenings and just before bed (did not want to take it during day as it did make me tired) and it did have a soothing effect. It seems to feel like it sticks around a while in my throat and esophagus and has a soothing feeling. As for my cough, it did help during the night, firstly because it made me tired and I found it easier to get to sleep and there was less coughing on the second night of taking the medicine. By the fifth night my cough had pretty much gone.
Two weeks later though and I have another cold and my cough has started back so giving it another try now and hopefully it wont last that long this time!
It is very sticky and I used a syringe style thing that you get in kids medicines as it stopped me from getting drips down the side of the bottle.
Has worked for me and I noticed it is currently on offer in Boots for I think around 70-80p off so worth a try, they also do a non drowsy one but as my cough was worse during the night I went for the original.
Summary: Worked well for me so is something I will keep stocked in medicine cupboard during winter!
