Advantages: Tastes OK, helps with discomfort

Disadvantages: Won't get rid of your cough immediately, expensive

My cold is drawing to a close but I still have a couple of products left to review and Benylin Chesty Coughs Original is one of them.

I have used this cough syrup for many years. I use the original rather than the non-drowsy variety for two reasons: firstly, I tend to take it at night and so welcome the associated drowsiness, and secondly, the non-drowsy one gives me weird hallucinations.

This cough medicine comes in a brown, glass, transparent bottle. You can see how much is left inside so you know when to buy more, which is useful. It has a screw top lid which is easy enough to open. The instructions are printed on a white label which is stuck around the side of the bottle.

The medicine promises to have a 'soothing effect', ease irritation, and use a 'deep, penetrating action to loosen phlegm and clear bronchial and nasal congestion'. Adults and children over 12 can take 10ml four times a day, and children between 6 and 12 years can take 5ml four times a day. It is not recommended for use by children under 6 years.

As this may cause drowsiness, you shouldn't drive or operate machinery whilst under its influence. You also shouldn't mix it with alcohol.

I have found Benylin to be quite effective whenever I have had a bad cough. The medicine is easy to pour and is not too thick or gooey like some medicines. It goes down easily and tastes fine, unlike some cough syrups. It is very sticky so you may want to brush your teeth afterwards or have some water.

After I've taken Benylin I tend to feel a bit of a reduction in the pain and tightness in my chest. Coughing becomes a little less painful and when I use Benylin regularly then my coughs are only usually bad for two or three days, rather than a week or two. I haven't noticed any reduction in nasal congestion but I didn't buy cough medicine to help my nose.

I don't think this medicine is a miracle worker and it won't cure your cough overnight but it helps me to manage mine and reduces the discomfort. I will continue using it.

You can buy it at most supermarkets or pharmacies. It costs £3.34 for 150ml from Sainsburys, and a bottle will probably last you through one cold.

Summary: Has made my cold a bit more bearable

I've sworn by this remedy for years and find it much more effective than the newer non drowsy variety! Good review
