Benylin Dry Coughs Original
Advantages: Helped to relieve both mine and my sons cough
Disadvantages: The taste
Just before Christmas, both myself and my son had really dry, irritating coughs. I was hoping they would go on their own accord, but a couple of weeks later we were both still struggling with the symptoms so decided to visit our local chemist to see what they recommended.
They gave me Benylins Dry Cough Medicine to try. This medicine is suitable for both adults and children over the age of 6, and as my son is 8, he was safe to use this medicine. I am always careful to read the labels when using any type of medicine to make sure I don't exceed the recommended dosage and the label advised that I personally had one to two spoonful's every four hours and my son had one 5ml spoonful every four hours, though you shouldn't have more than four doses every 24 hours.
I was starting to get really aggravated with my cough and I know my son was the same so I followed the instructions to a tee in the hope of relieving my symptoms. I have always been a little sceptical of medicines as many I have tried don't do much to relieve the symptoms, but I was assured by the chemist that this was one of the best 'off the shelf' medicines around.
I was hoping this medicine had a fruit flavouring to it as although the taste of a medicine didn't bother me at my age, it can be a task in itself just to get the medicine into my son as most of them taste 'yacky' (his word, not mine). I tried it first in the hope of reassuring him that it tasted lovely, but unfortunately I knew this wasn't going to be the case. I personally found the taste of this medicine quite awful. As it wasn't flavoured, it didn't taste of anything in-particular but it just wasn't a pleasant experience so I knew I was going to have issues getting it down my son's throat. The first time wasn't too bad as he didn't know what to expect but we did have the expected issues after this. I had to have a drink on hand for him to take the taste away and I hate to admit that bribery also played a part!
Just like other medicines, this was really thick, sticky and gloopy. As it is really smooth, it does glide down the back of the throat easily and the thickness of it makes you feel like it is almost coating your throat with a layer of medicine to help ease the symptoms. I wouldn't say I noticed an immediate difference with either myself or my son but within 24-48 hours I started to feel the effects. This medicine doesn't get rid of the cough, but after a couple of weeks of constant coughing my throat was very dry and sore and I just needed relief from that more than anything.
The medicine contains diphenhydramine, dextromethorphan, and levomenthol which apparently stop allergy reactions in the body, supress dry coughs and ease congestion. I didn't have any congestion with my cough as it was purely a cough with no cold symptoms so I can't say whether this works or not but it definitely supressed the cough without actually getting rid of it. It still took a good couple of weeks for my cough to disappear completely, even with using this medicine but using this medicine regularly did make living with the cough much easier and I found the same with my son too.
My son was determined to go to football training even though I knew that the running around in the cold would probably start his cough off so I reluctantly let him train but asked his coach to go easy on him. I dosed him up with this medicine before going in the hope that it would keep the cough at bay whilst he was training and it did seem to work. Of course he coughed at times but nothing that bothered him or concerned me.
Price wise a bottle of this medicine cost me just over £3.50 which isn't bad for a named brand and I would have willingly paid a bit more purely because it did make living with the cough a lot easier for both myself and my son.
Overall, I found this medicine quite impressive. There is nothing worse than a dry, irritable cough and I was at my wits end with it until I started to use this medicine. As said, it didn't get rid of the cough, nor did it claim to but it did supress the symptoms to enable me to get on with my hectic everyday life without it holding me back and it did the same for my son. Yes it tastes quite vile but this is the only real downside to the medicine and knowing it is suitable for children, I think the manufacturer could have done a little more to make it more appealing to children by giving it a nice fruity flavour.
For me though it did the job and therefore it comes with a recommendation from me.
Summary: A good way of helping to relieve a dry cough
