Advantages: Helps me to sleep

Disadvantages: Bit fiddly to get used to.

Life isn't always exciting. It isn't always full of things you enjoy and look forward to. It isn't always what you would have expected. Sometimes there are times when what we are doing is just plain "ordinary". Not exciting - dull, boring.......but these times are also essential to allow us to carry on the rest of our day/life and we should appreciate them just as much as we do the other, more exciting things, as without them we would be in a muddle.

The same goes for the things we buy - the nice things, the exciting things...they are things we like, that give us a lift as we pay for them, that make nice meals to share with friends or family, that we can appreciate as we walk by them and remember what prompted us to pick it up off the shelf. Then there are the less exciting things.....bleach........sanitary stuff.......EARPLUGS!! These things may not be high on the list of "ooh, today I bought....." comments, but boy are they essential, and without them, we would be slightly more in a muddle than we might otherwise be!

Yes, for the past 20 years, earplugs have been an absolute essential for me. I have tried many varieties, from the freebies that my husband brought home from work in a factory once, to some super duper mega expensive things that looked like clear plastic triple decker spaceships....but time after time, Boots again come up trumps with their very reasonably priced Muffles Ear plugs.

I have two reasons that I buy earplugs - one is because I am generally a poor sleeper. I always have been (sorry, Mum!) so if I am on a plane, in a hotel room with thin walls, or if the neighbours are having a late night barbecue party, I wake up frequently. Earplugs will help keep out that noise and help me sleep a bit better.

The other reason is because my husband snores for Britain.......you name it, he has tried it - from having his throat operated on and large chunks cut away, through losing weight, to buying sprays, and electric shock things that fit on his fingers....but to no avail.

So, several unwanted decibels permeate through the house as my husband gets a wonderful nights sleep (he can sleep through anything - typical!) and I just get more and more annoyed at the fact that I am awake.

These ear plugs are simple - they are a cylindrical shaped dense foam, about an inch long and half an inch in diameter. They have a completely flat end and a slightly rounded end. They are much more dense than many you can get - I find that the "thinner" ones just fall out and never seem to mould themselves to my ears.

To use the ear plugs, simply roll one in your fingers to gently soften it slightly, which makes it a bit more pliable, then pop it in your ear. It may help to pull your ear lobe with your other hand, just a bit, to open up the ear canal a bit more, allowing a better seal when you have the ear plug in place.

It may take a bit of practice, after all it is not the sort of thing we will have practiced in the playground, or have been taught at school, and it seems a bit alien to be putting chunks of foam in our ears, but persevere with it.....the effects are well worth the effort!

You currently get 5 pairs of these ear plugs in a box, from Boots for £2.19 - that is not bad for a good night's sleep! The ear plugs are reusable - I just pop mine in a clean sock, tie the top of the sock into a knot and put them in the washing machine.......although if I only used them infrequently, I would probably just throw them away.

So, whether you have a snorer for a bedfellow, or if you just want to be able to sleep through the dawn chorus, these are a useful addition to your bedside cabinet. I would guess that they are pretty much an essential for anyone working nights too.

Boring they might be......flippin useful, they definitely are!

Summary: Life's not all exciting, but even the boring stuff should be appreciated.

I live on a main road close to the city centre and when my sister comes to stay she has to wear ear plugs to filter out the noise. I might pick up some of these for her - they sound really good :-)

These really are good and when I once went four days without sleep because of rude neighbours who were running a home business directly above the bedroom of my studio flat they were just about the only thing that helped solve the problem. Nominated, because everyone needs sleep and those who sleep well don't realise how draining it can be for those of us who don't!
