Advantages: Eat Healthy, Exercise and the pounds will come off
Disadvantages: It takes longer than crash diets, but its healthier and more long term effective
I'm a 28 year old guy, and I've tried everything over the past 10 years to lose weight and get back to a healthy size. Nothing worked for me, mainly due to my lack of will power. But also because fad diets are incredibly boring, and really not that good for your health.
In April of this year I opted to sign myself up for a charity run. Fully aware that I was in the worst shape I'd been in my entire life, coming in at 17st 5lbs and barely able to climb the stairs to my flat, I had to get myself in some short of shape in order to do it. But I also had to cut out the crap, such as chips, take away, burgers etc to be able to shift the pounds.
Firstly, I went out running 3 times a week (starting with walk, moving it up to a slow job, and eventually doing 5 1/2 miles per time). It was incredibly painful to start with, my legs weren't able to sustain it for long periods of time. But eventually over the 8 weeks I got stronger and fitter, and by the time I was ready to do the 10k run in the summer - I was able to do it in a little over an hour.
I didn't do any silly fad diets, or get thin quick diets. I stuck to calorie and fat control, but ate well. In a typical day, I would have:
Breakfast: Porridge or Corn Flakes or 2 bits of bloomer toast with boiled egg
Lunch: Home-made soup and a brown roll or a Prawn Salad
Dinner: Grilled meat or Fish with potatoes and vegetables.
Snacks: I would also have 5 pieces of fruit throughout the day, a yoghurt and occassionally as a treat I would have a bag of Golden Light crisps which came in at less than 97 calories and 4 g of fat.
I also cut out alcohol for most of the time, and only had a drink at special occasions or on a night out, whereas before I would have a glass of wine in the evening.
I've continued since my run to do gentle exercise and try to walk / run twice a week when Glasgow weather permits. Its not so pleasant when you're in your work clothes and its freezing outside, but its got to be done. I've also continued eating well. And I think the fact that I'm well on target to achieve my target weight has kept me motivated.
As to date, I'm now 14st 6lbs. And because I've done it steadily rather than crashing it off, I've also found that I've very little stretch marks - which I think is probably a concern if you're looking to get a fair amount of weight off.
Its the best way to do it. Weightwatchers etc offer you advice and support on their diets and is probably the best of that type of controlled diets. But only if you continue to stick with it.
Otherwise, do yourself a favour - do regular but gentle exercise, cut out the fatty rubbish and regular drinking, and you'll find the pounds come off at a reasonable rate.
If you have other suggestions, feel free to add some comments and I'll be happy to update my review to include them.
